124
NFL modifies AFC West formula By John Clayton ESPN.com DANA POINT, Calif. -- The NFL is expected to adopt a slight modification of its scheduling formula to give East Coast and Midwest teams a break when they oppose AFC West teams, a source said Monday. Since 2002 when the league expanded to eight four-team divisions, the NFL has used a rotating formula in which a team plays four opponents within its conference once every three years and four teams in the other conference every four years. East Coast and West Coast teams have complained about their cross-country trips. Under the proposed changed -- which does not require a committee vote -- the NFL will alter its AFC West scheduling formula so that no team would have to play at Oakland and at San Diego in the same season. To modify the issue, the schedule will be adjusted so if a team is scheduled to play at Oakland, it would play at either Denver or Kansas City, two teams that are geographically closer to the east and midwest, and not at San Diego. If a team has to play at the Chargers, its schedule would include visiting either Denver or Kansas City and not the Raiders. Under the current rotation of opponents, AFC South and NFC West teams are scheduled to play the AFC West in 2010, which is the first year of the new plan. Last year, the Patriots and the Jets had to make West Coast trips to play AFC West opponents and NFC West teams. The Patriots chose to remain on the West Coast twice last season -- for back-to-back games against San Francisco and San Diego in October and Seattle and Oakland in December -- to minimize the wear-and-tear the schedule presented. The Jets, meanwhile, played at San Diego and then had to travel to Oakland three weeks later. In December, New York visited San Francisco, returned home to play Buffalo, then went back to the coast to play Seattle. The Jets were upset by the Raiders as part of a late-season swoon that prevented them from making the playoffs. Senior writer John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com. Klecko73isGod
Another big factual error in an ESPN article today. Chicken Little Clayton, the Jets lost to the Seahawks as part of a late season swoon. The loss to the Raiders was early in the season you miserable prick! CTM
It's actually tougher the other way. Particuarly when these teams have to play at 1pm. They were something like 2-20 last season, and was the single biggest factor in the dolphins winning the division..

Sperm Edwards
The Jets were upset by the Raiders as part of a late-season swoon that prevented them from making the playoffs. We were all pretty upset by that.
Bravejamriot
The problem isn't playing both the Raiders and San Diego. Its that we had to play the AFC west AND the NCF West. So we had to add the Niners and Seahawks on there. If they would just change the rotation to avoid having both Western divisions in the same year, it would be fine.
