Garcia, Shanahan set to visit again

Denver eyes backup for Plummer

By Bill Williamson

Denver Post Staff Writer

Quarterback Jeff Garcia arrived in Denver on Sunday night for a second visit with the Broncos.

He met with coach Mike Shanahan in Indianapolis on Feb. 26 at the NFL combine.

Cleveland released Garcia, 35, last month after one year with the team. The six-year veteran also has talked to Detroit and Tampa Bay.

Garcia, who would come to Denver as Jake Plummer's backup, has a style similar to Plummer's.

Last week, Bill Walsh, the architect of the West Coast offense, said he recommended that Garcia sign with the Broncos. Walsh signed Garcia with the San Francisco 49ers from the Canadian Football League.

While Garcia was coming to Denver, safety Kenoy Kennedy was leaving.

Kennedy was scheduled to arrive in Detroit for a visit Sunday night and is expected to be at the team's facility today. There have been strong indications the Lions will try to sign Kennedy during his visit.

Kennedy is scheduled to go to Miami, then Atlanta after visiting the Lions. There also has been interest from New Orleans and Kansas City. His agent, Vann McElroy, said he is still talking to Denver about Kennedy.

"The Broncos are still in it," McElroy said.

Denver also is talking to Miami defensive lineman Bryan Robinson, whom the Broncos pursued in September after he was released by Chicago. Robinson likely would be a starting defensive end candidate.

Denver still is in the hunt for Chike Okeafor, along with Seattle and Arizona. The Seahawks may have the inside track of retaining Okeafor.

The Broncos' Cooper Carlisle, who started the last four games of the season at guard, is visiting Atlanta today. Denver has shown an interest in keeping Carlisle as a backup.

Linebacker Donnie Spragan is in Miami today. He likely won't be back with the Broncos after they signed Ian Gold last week.

I am not sure they have a TE on their roster right now.

Combine that with how low our offer was, I think their decision has already been made.

their cap room is 1.7 mill right now and the contract for Putz boy is 1.5 mill the first year...if they match right now they will lose out on these other guys they are chasing and will have to free up a bunch of room in a short time frame

its not about the money offered its about the timing

and the deadline is 2 pm Friday

Wasn't aware of that. If things play out that way it's good news for us....Thanks.

basically they signed Putz immediately after another one of their players signed elsewhere as well, leaving them with another hole to scramble to fill while also entertaining other FA's and then we hit them with the dilemna of having to match PUTZ, that leaves them in a bind

its not taht they wouldn't pay the kid but that they probably wont be able to pull it off this quickly and free up teh room to make it happen with holes at backup QB, safety, CB etc and now TE

this was a crafty and great move by TB and so many people on the board are bashing him for it, he's gonna steal this kid from Denver and will have eliminated our needs at TE, RB and WR all in one week

and still have a month left to address DT, CB and safety in FA and we may just enter the draft without any MAJOR needs

this offseason is working out great so far aside from DT

If they get Putzier for the pocket change they threw at him, Terry gets a gold star. IMO, all this does is force Denver to speed up their decision-making as far as what to do with Trevor Pryce. Now, if Terry finagled this thing to end up with Pryce on the cheap by forcing Denver to deal, then it's brilliance.

I agree. Even if they let Putzuier go, wouldn't they have to pay another TE?

Even a washed up Stephen Alexander or Ituli Mili would cost 900k per season...Add in a decent backup--because the Broncos have so little at TE--and that's another $500k...

I think they will "re-do contracts" or whatever they have to keep this player. That's what I think.

Their new special teams coach told the Denver post 3 weeks ago Putzier had "Pro Bowl talent"....They can't let him let him go for a contract that has a $2.5 million bonus---that's peanuts for quality NFL starters....Grant Wistrom got like $13 million in a bonus and top OT & QB's ask for bonus in the $15-20 area.

I Hope the Jets get Putz....But Denver's GM should be fired on the spot if he goes...You can't create such a cap mess, that you can't even sign your players to "low contracts".

IMO, we'll be lucky if they just forget to re-sign their TE because they're chasing Bryan Robinson around. Only Terry Bradway would do something that stupid. Simple as that.

Well said TS..People are hoping Byran Robinson, Itili Mili and Kelly Herndon will save the day for the Jets...

What they don't realize, is these players have almost no value to Denver, except as backups...They'd be crazy to let Putz. go...

But stranger, dumber have happened, so the Jets can hope, right?

Heck, even if there's only a 10% chance Putzier won't resign with Denver, the Jets did the right thing--they took a chance--albeit should offered more.

By the way, their needs at other spots are minor compared to their needs at safety--Broncos have NO TE's LEFT from 2004...NONE.

Along with orchestrating the Coles deal so Washington can't afford Smoot thus giving us a oppurtunity to sign him!!

Even RSeymour would be proud. :o
