Kings apologize for Detroit-bashing pictures

November 10, 2005

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- The Sacramento Kings bought full-page ads in two newspapers to apologize for showing derogatory images of Detroit on video screens prior to their home opener against the Pistons.

When the Pistons were introduced Tuesday night, the Arco Arena scoreboard flashed pictures of abandoned buildings, burned-out cars, piles of rubble and other negative images of Detroit. The Pistons won the game 102-88.

The Kings apologized that night and owners Joe and Gavin Maloof bought a full-page ad that ran in Thursday editions of The Detroit News, expressing ``great respect for Detroit's long and rich tradition as a landmark American city and the incredibly positive impact the Motor City has made over the course of our country's history.''

The ad will also run in Friday editions of the Detroit Free Press.

``We all feel terrible that we made just a big mistake, and we want to communicate that,'' Kings spokeswoman Sonja Brown told the News.

Pistons coach Flip Saunders said he and his assistants were initially angered by the display, but settled down after hearing from the Kings.

``Their organization has always been very first-class. Opening night, sometimes they get really excited,'' Saunders told the Free Press. ``Some of their people, they just really weren't quite thinking all the way.''

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league is reviewing the incident.

NBA policy prohibits ``ridiculing of opponents or game officials ... via PA announcements, video, or matrix displays, music or mascot skits.''

Looks like Detroit got an apology

Boo hoo hoo.

When did we begin living as a nutless civilization? Everything offends everyone. I'm so sick of this. Everyone is a ******* pussy.

Isn't it rather hypocritical to get in an all-out riot with players and then a year later to get offended when someone categorizes your city as a place full of low-lifes and degenerates? Cry me a river, dickface!

Uh, as a resident of the area, we are rather sick of the images. It's not hypocritical. It was one (ONE) jackass who started it, and the players continued it. So, the entire area is blanketed with the bad image? It didn't even take place in Detroit. It was in Auburn Hills, a full fourty five minutes from Detroit.

The crux of it is, it's nothing new. It's the same old recycled crap. If it was something new, it'd be different, but it's not. It's the same thing they've been saying for decades. AT least come up with new material.

And Guns... quit being a self hater! Embrace your inner Detroit!

Sorry shadow got to disagree with you on this one. The fact of the matter is, the City of Detroit is an absolute, 100% sh-thole. A somewhat 'revamped' downtown and a couple new stadiums amount to nothing more then putting lipstick on a pig. The school system is the laughingstock of the nation. The Police and Fire Department are so underpaid, overworked and understaffed that they can barely provide the most basic of services in a remotely quick manner. The city services rival that of Baghdad's. Streets don't get plowed, water main breaks go on for weeks to the point that in the winter, entire neighborhoods have their vehicles frozen in place. More then 1/2 the buildings u see in the skyline are fully or partially abandoned. Burnt out hulks of houses remain standing because the city is unable and/or unwilling to tear them down. Entire city blocks have been reclaimed by nature because nothing has been built on them in the 20 years since all the houses disappeared. The roads rival that of the surface of the moon. After the Wings, Tigers, Lions, an occasional show at the Fox, and some 1/2 ass museums there is nothing to do in that city. Their jewel "Belle Isle" park is run down, overgrown and unmanaged/mismanaged to the point that the fricken deer have all escaped the zoo and roam the island freely. Almost every major crime I deal with at work originates from that city. The 'temporary' casinos have been in place for 7 years and still the 'permanent' casinos have yet to even break ground. I say I'm from the Detroit area out of sheer conviencene but in the end, I'm embarrased to say I live near this city. The place is a hopeless, bottomless pit of doom that will never get any better, as evidenced by the fact that the illustrious residents of Bartertown reelected their crony mayor for another 4 years of corruption, malfeasance, suspicious spending and parties at the mayor's mansion after which a stripper is mysteriously killed and no one seems to care. I mean this when I say this, if a plane accidently dropped a nuke on that city or say a fire 'tragically' swept the city and burnt it to the ground, it would be the singlemost greatest event since John Lennon got wasted.

Wait a minute... since when has Belle Isle ever been a gem?

Well yeah, Detroit sucks. We've established that. But, nothing happens there. Nothing. It's boring. That's my point. Detroit gets the blame for what happens in Auburn Hills and East Lansing. Detroit isn't that. It's just boring.

Yes, their police and fire are way underpaid. That's true.

And if a nuke hit it, we'd be ****ed!

Hey Gun;

No pride in your hometown, ehh?

Truth be told, I have heard everthing you have said and more. There is a major problem in Detroit, and no administration, either local, or on the State level, seems to be able to resolve.

A shame.

MBN - it's a weird thing. I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula and truth be told, out of my 31 years on Earth, I've lived in the metro Detroit area for only 10 of them. So yes you hit the nail on the head, I don't have much pride about this city, specially when you consider that as a transplant, I have a fresher look on things then someone who may have grown up around here all their life. The situation is almost hopeless in that city.
