AFJF
Belichick has won three rings in four years and now is about to start calling the plays on offense despite being a defensive guy his whole life. After what he accomplished last year as a HC with a rag-tag secondary, the man established himself as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NFL. While noting can take away what he has accomplished to this point, will he hurt his legacy if the pats aren't successful this season by giving the impression that he's become too big for his britches and feels there's nothing he can't accomplish? IMO, if he wins the SB this year he is hands down the BEST COACH EVER. 3 Rings as a HC, 2 as a DC, and maybe a 3rd as a HC/OC? Unreal in the modern NFL and I wonder if thats whats driving him to call his own plays. Is he putting his legacy ahead of the team or is this something he can really pull off? Opinions? Garb
Belichick put himself before the team that will propel him into the elite? No. BB's genius as a defender is precisely why he will succeed at running the offense....although it has been reported that his protege, last name Dabol (29 years old!) is helping drive the offensive bus. GimmeShelter
Hopefully this (being the OC rather than bringing one in) will be his downfall. As a delusional Jet fan, I am a firm believer that Brady saved BB's HC career and Billy Boy has not and never will win w/out Romeo and Weiss. Maxman
He will go down as a good coach. One who was once considered to be a great coach. Time will expose his warts. His real legacy will be for giving a great coach a big break. Hopefully Charlie Weis remembers this and appreciates what Bill did for him.

Barton
He'll never be the best coach ever unless he wins like 10 superbowls. Looking at his career outside of new england and there is nothing particularly special about his career. If he can go to another team and win 3 superbowls with that team, than yes, maybe we can call him the best coach ever. But the pats arent the greatest dynasty ever, not even close. Winning superbowls with 2 or more different teams cannot be undervalued.

The guy was a DC on two SB champs, a SB participant, and the Jets resurgance from 1-15 to the AFC championship game. It's okay to love your team and hate the opponent but give credit where it's due. From my understanding he sucked there, and was doing a poor job in NE until Bledsoe got creamed by......uh....mo lewis
relayer
"But the pats arent the greatest dynasty ever, not even close..." As a very long time Jets fan, I can hate the phish (especially) and the Pats for any reason I want, or for no reason at all. But, wow, this guy has been magnificent in N.E. and has, in fact, created a team that does nothing but win Super Bowls. Crap, they've got three in only 4 years. That screams dynasty to me.... In the long run, the team is probably better having the committe handle the duties. For argumrent's sake, let's say he went after Norm Chow or any name OC. Do you think Chow/name OC and aspiring HC would come to New England, a place where he will have to check any ego at the door? Remember, no camera time for New England coaches. A place where their innovation might be reigned in for a few seasons until they proove themselves? Belichick has a system in place that works. If it continues, it is credited to Charlie and if it gets worse, they suck. I think the answer for both are no. I do not see a coach like Chow or Dinglebrry, coaches that have cut their teeth at that level or at college, it will essentially set their career back a year or two. Which leaves the OC job going to a position coach, that probably has not had that position before. Why not fill it from within by a position coach? Brian Daboll has been with the team for 6 years and Josh McDaniels has been with the team for 5 years. Two coaches competing for the job. No, better way to see them push each other. Two coaches who are schooled in the Belichick way. I do not believe for a second Scar was up for it, but I think he is there as a mentor to the two young coaches. A name OC might be gone after this season for a HC job. Daboll/McDaniels will be there for a few seasons. They will live in the shadow of Belichick and to a lesser extent Weiss, until they have prooven themselves. As for Belichick's place in the game, IMHO he is the best of this ERA and probably one of the Top 5-10 coaches of all-time. EB - He took over an old 3-13 Cleveland Browns team and had them competitive within a year and in the playoffs by year 4. Their defense got better almost over night. His problem in Cleveland was himself. He was a control freak, not much has changed, but he delegates alot more now. Belichick was not instantly great, he had to learn from his mistakes.
