NFL draft redux  : Reprojecting the first round of the 2013 draft

The NFL's 2013 season is just one game shy of being complete, but Super Bowl Sunday is still more than a week away (and no, we're not counting the All-Star farce that is the Pro Bowl). That gives us the perfect vantage point to look back one last time at the first round of April's draft, and consider what would change if we knew then what we know now ?

A few reminders about our annual re-draft of the first round: Rookie season production always carries significant weight in this hypothetical exercise, more so than projection or potential. But it's not everything. If there were first-rounders who underachieved this season, they might still make our re-draft, perhaps just not in the same spot they originally went.

In the span of time, plenty of the picks that were made in 2013 might prove to have been for the best. But as always, using a current version of hindsight, we tried to link up teams with players who would have been useful due to the specific circumstances of the 2013 season. We also again kept the first-round order as it unfolded on the first night of the draft, rather than adding the complicating layer of un-doing trades.

I shouldn't have to say this by now, but don't forget: Your results may vary ...

1. Kansas City Chiefs

(Original pick: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan)

Re-do pick: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri

Fisher looked lost at right tackle early in the season and really didn't start playing with much consistency and command of his position until the final weeks of the schedule. But Richardson was a disruptive and productive force from Day 1 for the Jets, and he excelled at stuffing the run, while also proving he could regularly find his way into the backfield (15.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 33 quarterback pressures). Richardson, who got my vote for the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year, even turned into a useful Jumbo fullback late in the year and scored a pair of goal-line situation touchdowns.

Kiper re-grades '13 draft, tweaks Jets' mark

We all know what Rex Ryan thinks of last year's draft for the New York Jets; he gave it an A+ grade. Our man Mel Kiper, Jr., disagrees.

Nine months after the fact, the ESPN draft guru reviewed every team's draft and applied updated grades. Back in April, Kiper gave the Jets a B. He improved it up to a B+. That's still pretty good, although not quite up to Ryan's opinion.

Explaining his new grade, Kiper says he gave it a slight bump "because they hit a huge home run" with  :winking0001: Sheldon Richardson  :winking0001:   (first round), whom he calls one of the best run-stuffing 3-4 defensive ends in the league. No doubt, Richardson enjoyed a terrific rookie season and he's one of the leading candidates for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, which will be announced on the eve of Super Bowl XLVIII.

Kiper stopped short of giving the Jets an A because, as he explains, cornerback Dee Milliner (first round) "struggled mightily" and quarterback Geno Smith (second round) was too inconsistent. Milliner played well over the final few weeks; in fact, he was named AFC Defensive Rookie of the Month for December. Prior to December, yes, he struggled. Smith's season followed the same arc as Milliner, although he probably had more early success than Milliner. Guard Brian Winters (third round) showed promise at the end, but his season was an epic struggle. One thing to remember about Winters: It was his first time at guard. With a full offseason to train and get comfortable at the position, he should be better in 2014.

When you're thinking about the Jets' '13 draft, think about this number: 3,967.

That's the combined total of offensive, defensive and special teams snaps played by the Jets' five rookies -- impressive. It's the highest amount in the AFC East, slightly better than the Buffalo Bills (3,819) and way ahead of the New England Patriots (2,672) and Miami Dolphins (1,886).

~ ~ 3. The case for Sheldon : On Super Bowl eve, the major post-season awards will be announced, including NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. The top candidates are thought to be defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson and Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso. I have one of the 50 votes and, for the record, I voted for Richardson. He didn't have a gaudy sack total (3.5), but he impacted the defense. Example: The Jets allowed the fewest yards per rush (3.4) between the tackles, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Richardson was a big reason why. My gut tells me that Alonso will win the award. They're both deserving.
