Darrelle Revis on 2016 Jets: 'We feel we are a playoff team'

FLORHAM PARK — Darrelle Revis paused for a second. He looked at the dozen or so media members standing in front of him, then up at the roof inside the Jets locker room, then back at the reporters.

Just how high can the Jets soar this year?

"Our ceiling is higher than this one," Revis said on Thursday. "We've got all the pieces. We do. We feel we are a playoff team."

It has been five long years since the Jets last qualified for the postseason. In 2010, Revis, quarterback Mark Sanchez and head coach Rex Ryan led them to the AFC Championship game. Since then, it has been disappointment after disappointment.

In 2011, the Jets went 8-8. In 2012, 6-10. In 2013, 8-8. In 2014, 4-12. The Jets fired Ryan after that season, and replaced him with Todd Bowles. But Bowles' first season may have ended with a harder gut punch than Ryan's last four.

The Jets had the postseason within their sights, only to let it slip away.

Fitz needs to slide, and he knows it

The Jets want nothing more than to see Fitzpatrick go feet-first when he scrambles.

Facing a win-and-in situation against the Buffalo Bills, whom Ryan took over after being jettisoned from New York, the Jets lost, 22-17. The Jets were playing for everything, and the Bills nothing. New York still couldn't get it done. The Jets finished 2015 with a nice 10-6 record— a six-win improvement from 2014— but without the playoffs, it didn't feel like much of an accomplishment.

Revis said the bitter aftertaste of being denied is still in the mouths of those players who played in the game. And most of those players (starters) are back this season.

On offense, running back Matt Forte and left tackle Ryan Clady are the lone new faces. On defense, it's linebacker Jordan Jenkins and defensive lineman Steve McLendon.

"We had a chance," Revis said. "We definitely had a chance [last year]. We got most of the guys back, and we feel very confident going into the season... Guys were very disappointed how it ended last year. This is a fresh start for us. You'll see that. You'll see some fire this year."

While the Jets didn't make the playoffs last season, they'll play what feels like every team that did to start 2016. In their first six games, the Jets face the Bengals (12-4 last season, made playoffs), Bills (swept Jets last season), Chiefs (11-5, playoffs), Seahawks (10-6, playoffs), Steelers (10-6, playoffs) and Cardinals (13-3, playoffs).

The Bills, Chiefs, Cardinals and Steelers games will be played in Buffalo, Kansas City, Arizona and Pittsburgh.

An unbelievably challenging two-month stretch, no doubt. It's one that can either make, or break, the Jets' season.

"The one thing we have to control is how fast we start," Revis said. "The beginning part of the season? We definitely don't want to fall behind because we do have a tough schedule. We have to respond very quickly to the teams we're facing.

"We have to come out and have the momentum off the bat."

I am glad players have some fire in their belly regarding last season. Half of football is about talent and half is about the fire in you. We have talent and if we really have that fire, we will make the playoffs and be contenders. Players are in the system for a year now and Bowles has 1 year of learning in his belt. If we survive the ring of fire the first 6 weeks, sky is the limit.
