It's kind of crazy to think back to August when everyone thought the Jets were a sure-fire playoff contender.

Fast forward a few months, and there is a good chance the team is eliminated from the postseason on Monday night, when they face the Indianapolis Colts.

OK, so, everyone pretty much now knows the Jets aren't going to be playing for the Lombardi Trophy this season. That has been a presumed fact since Halloween. But now we've reached the point when math is going to eliminate the Jets.

So, what's it going to take?

By losing to the Patriots (9-2) on Sunday, the Jets (3-8) were eliminated from AFC East contention. Their only hope of reaching the postseason is by grabbing one of the two AFC Wild Card spots. To do that, the Jets will need to:

A) Finish with a better record than other AFC teams; or
B) Finish with the same record, but have the head-to-head advantage; or
C) Finish with the same record, but have the better conference record

You can read all the tie-breaking scenarios here.

The Chiefs beat the Broncos on Sunday night to improve to 8-3. The worst they can finish is 8-8. The best the Jets can finish is 8-8. The Chiefs beat the Jets earlier in the season, so the Chiefs have the tiebreaker advantage.

Is Darrelle Revis already thinking of leaving the Jets?

The Chiefs aren't guaranteed a spot in the postseason, but they are guaranteed to finish in front of the Jets. The Raiders (another AFC West team) have nine wins, which ensures them a better final record than the Jets, too.

So, that means the Jets are still, mathematically, in contention for the sixth and final wild card spot.

But the Dolphins and Broncos, who are both 7-4, can eliminate the Jets this week. The Jets don't play the Broncos this season and will play the Dolphins again, so there's nothing either team can do this week to guarantee they finish with a better conference record. So, the Jets cannot be eliminated before their Monday night game against the Colts.

However, if the Broncos (playing the 2-9 Jaguars) or Dolphins (playing the 6-5 Ravens) win, and the Jets lose to the Colts, the Jets will be eliminated from the playoffs.

Where are the Jets set to pick in the NFL Draft?

The Raiders, Dolphins and/or Broncos would finish with a better final record than the Jets. The Chiefs have the head-to-head advantage. One of those AFC West teams will win their division, while the other two, or the Dolphins, would eliminate the Jets' from wild card contention.

According to the New York Times playoff simulator, the Jets have a 1 percent chance of making the playoffs.

Did we really need this moronic thread ?

I thought this was very helpful.  I had actually assumed (ignorantly) that the Jets were already eliminated from playoff contention.  They are not.

That explains why they are not playing the newbie QBs.  The screaming needs to increase when they are actually officially eliminated, but for now, I am willing to cut them slack.

We want Hack and/or Petty fully ready to prepare in the offseason and training camp.  We don't need them to be maimed by Ijalana and Breno.
