Jets daily draft nugget: You've probably heard of the second-round jinx. Every regime since the 1970s has been impacted. The last second-round pick to make the Pro Bowl on offense or defensive was DE Mark Gastineau (1979 draft). Since then, they've had 36 mostly forgettable picks, 11 of whom never reached the 30-game mark. Seven of the 11 are still active. The last good one was LB David Harris (2007). Maybe S Marcus Maye (2017) can help change the narrative.

Jets daily draft nugget : Their draft classes from 2013-2017 rank only 29th in WAR (wins above replacement), according to Pro Football Focus. Drafted players with the highest WAR per season: Leonard Williams, Sheldon Richardson, Jamal Adams and Elijah McGuire. Drafted players with the lowest WAR: Bryce Petty, Darron Lee, Geno Smith, Chad Hansen and Devin Smith.

Jets daily draft nugget: In three drafts, GM Mike Maccagnan has used only one pick in the first and second rounds on a so-called premium position. Most people consider quarterback, left tackle, edge rusher and cornerback as the premium positions. In 2016, he drafted QB Christian Hackenberg in the second round. He has yet to play in a game. Maccagnan's other picks: Safety (Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye), inside linebacker (Darron Lee), defensive end/tackle (Leo Williams) and wide receiver (Devin Smith).

Jets daily draft nugget: Since the blockbuster offensive-line draft of 2006, when they used first-round picks on LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson and C Nick Mangold, the Jets haven't paid much attention to the front five. Since then, they've picked 11 linemen, including only two in the first three rounds — Vlad Ducasse (2010, second round) and Brian Winters (2013, third). It's possible they could address it this year in the third round.

Jets daily draft nugget: USC QB Sam Darnold is visiting the Jets today as the team begins to wrap up its pre-draft visits. Darnold is widely projected as the No. 1 overall pick to the Browns, so the Jets' chances of landing him with the third pick are slim. Still, the team is performing due diligence in the event he slips. Only nine days to the draft. Soon, the suspense will be over.

Jets daily draft nugget: Only three of their own first-round picks remain on the roster — DL Leonard Williams, LB Darron Lee and S Jamal Adams. The only teams with fewer are the Seahawks (Earl Thomas and Germain Ifedi) and Bills (Carl Lawson and TreDavious White). There's a certain team from the AFC East that, like the Jets, has only three. The Patriots are left with Devin McCourty, Dont'a Hightower and Malcolm Brown.

Jets daily draft nugget: One of the biggest heartbreaks occurred in 1997, when they owned the No. 1 overall pick and Peyton Manning decided to stay in school. Citing league rules, Bill Parcells never made an effort to sway Manning into turning pro, but he certainly could've sent a message through his father, Archie. Parcells wound up trading down twice, picking LB James Farrior with the eighth pick. He was a solid player (two Pro Bowls with the Steelers), but Parcells passed on two future Hall-of-Fame tackles — Orlando Pace (first) and Walter Jones (sixth).

Jets daily draft nugget: NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said yesterday he "wouldn't be surprised at all" if the Jets pick Baker Mayfield. But that doesn't mean Mayock would endorse that decision. He said his top-rated QBs are Sam Darnold and Josh Allen. Some league insiders believe the Jets' choice could come down to Mayfield or Josh Rosen. Said Mayock: "I don't have either of them rated that highly."

Jets daily draft nugget: Everybody knows they need pass-rushing help, but it'll be tough to find one. They have no picks in the second round and the overall depth in this draft class is "terrible," according to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. He said LSU OLB Arden Key, once considered a first-round prospect, is worth "a roll of the dice in the third round." The Jets have the eighth pick in the third round (72 overall).

Jets daily draft nugget: No team has traded up into the top five more than the Jets — four times in the common-draft era (since 1967). None of the three previous picks (Mark Sanchez, Dewayne Robertson and Lam Jones) made a single Pro Bowl. The Jets also are part of another trend. Since 2013, only nine of the 12 first-round quarterbacks were taken with picks acquired via trade. The exceptions: Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota and Blake Bortles.

Jets daily draft nugget: Does hand size matter for a quarterback? A lot of NFL people think it does, especially in cold-weather cities. GM Mike Maccagnan declined this week to say how much value he puts on hand size, saying he doesn't want to tip his intentions. If he picks Baker Mayfield (9 1/4 inches), we'll know it doesn't matter much in his opinion. Sam Darnold (9 3/8), Josh Rosen (9 7/8) and Josh Allen (10 1/8) have bigger hands than Mayfield.

Jets daily draft nugget: Finally, it's draft day! They have six picks, but they're hoping to acquire more through trades. The six: Round 1 (3 overall), Round 3 (72), Round 4 (103), Round 5 (148), Round 6 (165) and Round 7 (209). They like the running-back depth and could go for a back in the third round. Defensive end and cornerback also are big needs. Player to watch: Troubled WR Antonio Callaway, who has a list of off-the-field issues. The Jets had him in for a top-30 visit. He'd be a highly controversial selection.
