Hmm. Well Becton earns a starting gig on being drafted 11 overall and McGovern and Lewis probably get starting jobs based on contract. If Edoga beats out Fant he will be the most expensive swing tackle in football. Winters if he's still here, and hasn't taken a pay cut, will be the starting RG. That feels unlikely however and more likely GVR makes more money than Andrews so he wins that job etc.

look at  Ryan Kalil last year...the contract size in the NFL  dictates playing time whether it's fair or not

could Clark win a job based on merit? it's feasible based on what the team wants long term (Becton and Clark mashing on the left side) but it's because of the draft pick investment that makes his story possible.

for a guy like Conor McDermott to win a starting job, there'd have to be massive injury depletion (which could very well happen)

You can talk contractual obligations until you're blue in the face. The best 5 will start. All of the contracts given out whether it be free agents or draftees can be worked around. There's NOTHING currently in the way of an OL contract that's forcing the Jets hand contractually.

I'd be shocked if he started. They paid decent money to just about every spot on the line. Maybe he could sneak into the RT spot, but according to everything I've read he'll probably be a guard

He is in an excellent position to step in when someone gets hurt and earn the job that way, though.

It feels like fans have a version of this conversation every offseason

bottom line a guy like Kalil was getting 500k game checks EVERY WEEK

they aren't going to cut those checks (Big enough to buy a house -cash- every week) every Tuesday morning or whatever and keep him on the bench. They just won't. Businesses aren't run that way.

It's hopeful to believe the NFL is a league based on merit. It's based on GM's giving contracts and then leaning on the HCs for playing time so these contracts look good to the fans.

Like i said, it does happen like once in a blue moon but the only reason Wayne Chrebet made this team was because everyone in front of him besides Keyshawn got hurt. It wasn't just that he caught every  ball in camp. He also needed injury decimation, that's what Clark needs to happen to start this season. He is a draft pick however not like Chrebet the team will give him every chance to succeed.

GIven the disrupted, limited off-season, I think it will make it a lot harder for rookies to start.   Mid round pick like Clarke is probabaly a long shot, but hopefully will see some action this year and be ready to start next season.

That is a very good point. It used to be a rookie lineman would sit a year and get some experience going up against the defensive starters in camp and practice to get used to the exotic fronts and overload blitzes requiring alert switch offs . there has been a trend to start some guys right out of college but guys from smaller schools need the extra time in my opinion just to prevent free runs at quarterbacks. you usually cannot out tough guys in the nfl unless you are a freak amongst freaks. there are few of those.
