Brooks dismissed from UVa football team

It has been a long, tough stretch for Virginia coach Al Groh, as he has faced off-field problems with a couple of key players, as well as the task of rebuilding his coaching staff after four departures late last year. It seemed as if football and recruiting had become the focus again, until this week anyway. CavsCorner.com has learned that one of UVa's top players has been dismissed from the team.

If we were somehow able to nab Brooks in the supplemental draft then I say do it. He's got loads of talent and god knows we need some depth at the LB position. Barry Gardner and Mark Brown arn't the best back-up's we could have....although I like Brown, he can't play all 3 positions and McClover, who knows about him...he seems to be more of a special teamer.

this might sound like a dumb question, but i really have no clue....

whats the supplimental draft? who qualifies for it, and how does it work exactly?

I was wondering the same thing. Only thing I could think of is that he may not have declared for the 2006 draft by a certain date & is therefore not draftable on draft weekend. Don't know really; it's just a guess.

wow. This is surprising, I wonder what he did to get kicked off the team??

He's a big linebacker, who has alot of experience in the 3-4. But I was never really impressed with him. That, and he's overweight and has bad knees too?

Riggs, when or where can Ahmad Brooks workout? Not the combines, and probably not a UVA proday either?

Individual team workouts at team complexes I would guess.

Possibly his old High School or a local High School near by where he lives.

If you believe Al Groh, he is almost in TO's class, which is a bit of a surprise. I get the feel Groh just wants him to leave the program. He's sick of all issues and willing to move forward. Addition by subtraction, despite the immense talent?

He's very gifted. I can't even imagine how good he'd be if he lost weight and didn't have his knees all messed up. Maybe a LeVar Arrington type? And, his weight problems make his knee problems worse -- much worse.

As far as weight, rumor is he's ballooned up to 280, at least 30 pounds overweight....

He has a degenerative knee condition, which may or not ever get better -- career could last a long time; or end in his first practice.

The controversial microfacture surgery is something he's already had and the results seemed "mixed" in 2005 -- missed most of the season with various injuries, including the knee.

********

As far as the supplemental draft, the process is fairly simply: Each team puts in a bid for the player in EACH round.

NFL will scan the bids and if NO team is willing to forfeit a future first rounder for Brooks, he clears the 1st round.

NFL scans the bids for a second round. If NO team is willing to forfeit a future second rounder for Brooks, he clears the 2nd round.

Now, suppose 5 teams want Brooks in round 3.....NFL will reward Brooks to the team with the worst record and that team forfeits a corresponding pick in the next draft.

Basically, because of a 4-12 record in 2005, the Jets would always be in prime position in each round for all supplemental players.

****

Barton, he'd workout at Virginia, unless the school banished him and then he'd workout where ever he can find....NFL scouts don't like to show up for one player only, but he might be worth the trip.
