ARodJetsFan
26 minutes ago, peebag said: So what contract details exactly can these rookies barter on? I thought with the rookie contracts there was not much wiggle room. How rookie wage scale operates The rookie wage scale is essentially a salary cap within the overall salary cap. The increases in rookie salaries from one draft class to another are primarily tied to growth of the salary cap. Signing bonuses are going up 3.79%, which is the biggest increase since 2019. The increase had been 1% for each of the last three years because the NFL and NFLPA agreed in 2020 to borrow money from future rookie wage scales to keep 2021 rookie deals from decreasing because of the 2020 revenue shortfall caused by COVID-19. There's a league-wide limit on the total amount of compensation for rookies with specific salary parameters for each draft slot. Teams have maximum and minimum amounts that can be spent on their picks based on draft position. All contracts for draft choices are four years. Each pick in the draft has a salary floor and ceiling in the first year and over the four years of the contract. There are very few negotiable items with rookie contracts anymore. The salary components of a deal are restricted to signing bonus, base salary, roster bonus, reporting bonus, workout bonus and select incentives. The type of salary escalators and incentives that used to be responsible for salaries skyrocketing at the top of the draft are prohibited under the rookie wage scale. A majority of picks only have signing bonus and base salaries in their deals. An extremely important aspect of these deals is the first-year salary cap number (also known as the rookie pool number) because it helps determine the overall value of a contract. The first-year cap number or rookie pool number consists of the player's prorated amount of signing bonus and the rookie minimum base salary, which is $795,000 in 2024. The maximum annual increase in each of the four years of a deal is 25% of the first-year cap number. To illustrate this concept, 2023 26th overall pick Dalton Kincaid's cap numbers were limited to a $610,320 increase in each year of his deal because his first-year cap number was $2,441,280. Since all of these deals have minimum base salaries in the first year, the remainder of the contract is derived within these constraints. Draft-pick contracts can't be renegotiated until the conclusion of a player's third NFL regular season. This means the earliest Kincaid's deal can be redone is in January 2026. Teams have an option for a fifth year with first-round picks that must be exercised after the third year of the deal. The period for exercising fifth-year options begins after a player's third NFL regular season ends (Jan. 8, 2024 with the 2021 first-round picks). These options must be picked up prior to May 3. ARodJetsFan
Finally, someone is doing their homework, here is some new insight & Bravo Zulu to Howard Balzer for digging into this topic. Turns out that Corley, has Jimmy Sexton as his agent - which is undoubtedly, a large part of the problem. The wait for Arizona Cardinals RB Trey Benson’s contract continues (usatoday.com) The wait for Cardinals RB Trey Benson’s contract continues Howard Balzer follow June 23, 2024 12:01 pm MT As the final week of June begins, and the countdown to the start of training camps is less than a month, sticking out like sore thumbs, are two of the seven unsigned 2024 draft choices: New York Jets wide receiver Malachi Corley and Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson. Yes, 250 of the 257 selections have signed their rookie contracts. The other five unsigned are all first-round picks: Bears QB Caleb Williams (first overall) Bears WR Rome Odunze (ninth overall) Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (10th overall) Vikings EDGE Dallas Turner (17th overall) Bengals T Amarius Mims (18th overall) That group was reduced by two this past week when the Falcons signed quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (eighth overall) and the 49ers signed wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (31st overall). The second round was also completed last week when the Chargers signed second-round wide receiver Ladd McConkey. So, what’s the holdup for Corley and Benson, the first and second picks, respectively, in the third round? It’s difficult to pinpoint with the possibility that it’s simply the agents for Corley (Jimmy Sexton) and Benson (Andre Odum) waiting for the other to sign and that they are trying to distance themselves somewhat from the next group of third-round picks that have signed. There are very small gaps between the overall value of the third through sixth choices in the round. Also, 10 third-round contracts traded base-salary money in their second through fourth seasons for offseason workout bonuses ranging from $40,000 to $75,000. The 35 signed No. 3 choices all have full 2024 splits, which means landing on injured reserve would reduce their rookie minimum $795,000 base salaries to $470,000. None of the second-round picks have a 2024 split in their deals, so Sexton and Odum might be seeking to eliminate that for the first two selections in the round. It’s also likely that Sexton wants a premium for Corley being the first pick in the round, so Odum is motivated to wait so whatever the gap is won’t be too large. In addition, the reality of the slotting system is that the difference between each slot in a round isn’t significant, but there is a large dropoff from the final pick of one round to the first choice of the next round. The final pick in the first round, Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette, received a fully guaranteed contract worth $12.357 million. The contract for Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman, the first pick in the second round, was $2.28 million lower than Legette and included $2.7 million less guaranteed money. However, the gap between Legette and Pearsall is only $181,000. The last pick in the second round, 49ers cornerback Renardo Green, signed a deal worth $6.39 million with $3.348M guaranteed. The difference for the picks before him in both categories is in the low thousands. With Corley and Benson unsigned, the contract for Coleman is $332.000 lower than Green, but the guaranteed money gap is $2.1 million. In the third round, the difference between many picks is as low as $15,000. However, the falloff from Commanders wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, the final pick in the round, to the contract for the first choice in the fourth round, Panthers tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders, is $627,000, although there is a guaranteed-money difference of only a tad less than $16,000. The total gap is because of higher base salaries than the minimum in 2025-27. The base salaries for all fourth-round choices are the league minimum. Thus, the wait for Corley and Benson continues. For close examination, following are the breakdowns for the four players selected after Benson: T/G Brandon Coleman, Commanders $6.058M total; $1.226M signing bonus; $1.03M, $1.306M, $1.581M salaries 2025-27 T Caedan Wallace, Patriots $6.043M total; $1.215M signing bonus; $1.07M, $1.344M, $1.619M salaries 2025-27; $40K offseason workout bonuses 2025-27 LB Junior Colson, Chargers $6.027M total; $1.203M signing bonus; $1.069, $1.343, $1.617M salaries 2025-27 CB Dru Phillips, Giants $5.996M total; $1.181M signing bonus; $1.018M, $1.29M, $1.563M salaries 2025-27; $50K offseason workout bonuses 2025-27 All of the salaries from 2025-27 are larger than the league minimums of $960K, $1.075M and $1.19M.

This is when JD generally gets the stragglers in, just before training camp is due to start. Be interesting to see if Corley gains anything with this mini hold out. If all he’s looking for is injury guarantees in year two (second rounders all have this, third rounders don’t), I don’t think that’s too much of an ask. No GM wants to be the guy who breaks precedent, though. If he really wants to have a long career and make the big bucks down the line, getting himself into camp day one would be a good plan. No matter how much the league structures the terms of the rookie deals, agents are always trying to make a case for why they are needed. Arranging holdouts over a few thousand dollars here or there for 3% of the contract is good work if you can get it. The NFL should just go the rest of the way and fully structure them so there is nothing to negotiate. Save the players the 3% which is worth more than the agents can get them anyway. The agents can still work for 10% of the sponsorship money but it will end these silly holdouts.

ARodJetsFan
Over & done with. https://www.nbcsports.com/fantasy/football/player-news?playerNewsId=00000190-c112-d241-a7dd-fb13d6d10000 Jets signed No. 65 overall pick WR Malachi Corley to a four-year, $6.073 million contract. Corley was selected by the Jets in the third round after totaling 79 receptions for 984 yards and 11 touchdowns during his final year at Western Kentucky. In 2022, the versatile receiver ripped off a 101-1295-11 line and had a well-renowned reputation for his physical style of play and ability to create after the catch. While second-year UDFA Xavier Gipson has been rumored as the early favorite to earn the role as the Jets’ primary slot receiver, Corley should eventually take hold of that role during the season, if not much sooner. Lets see if JD can get Reddick squared away now.
