faba
By Kevin Goldstein July 19, 2005 If you are looking for the hottest team in the minors, head on over to the northeast corner of Tennessee, as the Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League are sitting pretty in the Western Division with a 22-4 record, thanks to a 12-game winning streak. While it's no surprise that the team leads the Appy League in runs scored, it's the pitching that's the real story. With a team line (227 innings, 169 hits, 66 walks, 262 strikeouts and a 2.58 ERA) that looks like something from a recent Cy Young winner, the Twins bullpen features a dominating lefty (Alexander Smit: 3-1, 2.14, 43 K in 21 IP), a dominating righty (Danny Powers: 2-0, 0.96) and an untouchable closer (Tim Lahey: 0.00 ERA in 11 games with seven saves). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's our weekly snapshot of baseball's hottest prospects, combining prospect status with recent performance. This list isn't a replacement or an update to our Top 100, because it often will change drastically from week to week based on performance. We aren't replacing Delmon Young or Felix Hernandez as the top prospects in baseball; rather, we are giving you a snapshot of the hottest prospects. Keep up with news on these prospects plus many more on a daily basis with the Daily Dish and The Baseball America Prospect Report. We love to hear your opinions, so send your list to Kevin at kevingoldstein@baseballamerica.com, but keep in mind there are only 20 spots on the Hot Sheet, and chances are there are more than 20 hot prospects during a week-long span. TomShane
How do you have a $208 million dollar payroll and not have one prospect ranked in the top 20?
Barton
How do you have a $208 million dollar payroll and not have one prospect ranked in the top 20? I think you just answered your own question, smart guy. But I dunno.. How come ROY Robbie Cano was never on that list? DOH!
GimmeShelter
Philip Hughes fanned seven in five innings of no-hit ball for Single-A Tampa on Monday. Hughes has a 2.13 ERA in 12 2/3 innings since overcoming some shoulder tendinitis and moving up to Tampa. Jul. 26 - 1:52 pm et EB's boy.....not bad. Barton
I've never seen Hughes pitch, but all I keep hearing is how this 19yr old pitcher is just dominating. What I love is he strikes guys outs and doesnt walk anybody. Look out for Tyler Clippard. He leads the FSL in strikeouts at just 20 years old and he has the best control in the Yankees farm system. Rarely, if ever walks a batter. What I love about Clippard is he is not afraid to pitch inside.
stormshadow19
What the? Where's Verlander? Wasn't he number one on this list like a month ago? And, where's Zumaya?

stormshadow19
Isn't Verlander in the majors now? Nope. He's done two spot starts. He's back in AA. He'll be back up, soon enough, but he's in AA right now.
faba
Latest updated top prospects By Kevin Goldstein July 26, 2005 People bring their gloves to the ballpark in hopes of catching a foul ball, and often fans with gloves get a little too involved in the game (see Maier, Jeffrey), but sometimes they get involved for all the right reason. In an International League game last week between Columbus and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Clipper infielder Mitch Jones broke the webbing in his first baseman's mitt after fielding a throw from third baseman Ryan Hankins. Jones went to get a new glove in the dugout, but nobody brought out a spare glove. As Jones waited, a fan tossed his glove to the slugging first baseman. Jones returned to the diamond with the fan's glove, finished the inning with it, and tossed it back to the fan at the end of the inning with a tip of the cap. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's our weekly snapshot of baseball's hottest prospects, combining prospect status with recent performance. MasonJet
How do you have a $208 million dollar payroll and not have one prospect ranked in the top 20? Robinson Cano and Chien Ming-Wang probably weren't on any of these lists. Yet Cano is the probable AL ROY and if Wang didn't get hurt he would have challenged him for that. stormshadow19
Joel Zumaya should be up with the Tigers next year... and should be a September call up. With him and Verlander on a crash course for the Tigers rotation in 06, they've got two hot rookie pitchers. And they both throw real hard. They just need to work on other pitches.
