GimmeShelter
Coles Deal Could Cost Skins By Nunyo Demasio Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, March 7, 2005; Page D03 By trading wide receiver Laveranues Coles to the New York Jets, the Washington Redskins now have diminished funds to try re-signing cornerback Fred Smoot. And the financial quandary may cause Washington to reduce its standing offer -- including a $10.5 million signing bonus -- which would almost certainly lead to Smoot's departure. Smoot initially declined the offer last season when both sides desired an extension. Swapping Coles for Santana Moss brought a salary cap hit of roughly $9 million, and leaves the Redskins with less than $2 million under the cap. Although that's sufficient to re-sign Smoot to the current offer, it would nonetheless prevent other signings. The Redskins hadn't ruled out adding a pass-rushing specialist or blocking tight end through free agency. And Washington must still re-sign some of its unrestricted free agents, such as offensive lineman Ray Brown; restricted free agents who may get offers from other clubs; and draft picks. To ease the financial bind, Washington plans on saving almost $2 million by trading Rod Gardner for a draft pick. And the club can create more cap space by releasing certain players. But Washington already restructured several contracts and is running out of accounting maneuvers.

GimmeShelter
they want to trade gardner too?? WOW Yeah too many drops for Gardner has the Skins hoping for a 3rd rounder in return for him.
TomShane
I'd give them a third rounder for Gardner. That could be a top-shelf class of receivers. Alot of headcases, but still, a nice bunch.

TomShane
You know who I'd bet they'd deal right now? Jon Jansen, their huge, great RT. He was out all last year with a knee, and he makes major coin. I wouldn't be surprised if he's quietly dealt before June 1st. He'd be GREAT here, IMO.

Rob D
But Washington already restructured several contracts and is running out of accounting maneuvers. Years of careless spending are finally coming back to haunt them. It couldn't happen to a better front office. I wonder if they have realised that signing Moss to an extension will only hurt their cap some more?

Oh yeah but Jansen just restructured and they are probably banking on his return along with the Raubauch signing as the answer to last years offensive problem. Wasn't it Chris Samuels that just re-structured?
GimmeShelter
Wasn't it Chris Samuels that just re-structured? Yes but Jansen also in mid February converted a portion of his base salary to bonus money giving them 1 mill in cap relief.
TomShane
Yes but Jansen also in mid February converted a portion of his base salary to bonus money giving them 1 mill in cap relief. Good call, Homes. Still, when Gibbs looks up and realizes that he has one corner and no receivers, he could start to scramble, and opening a little wiggle room by dealing someone (Jansen, Arrington) might be his only way out. File it under "Eh, could happen"
NJWARRIOR
This is definitely a spring bringing the inevitable Dan Snyder come-uppance. Nice call on Jansen and restructure, though I'd fall flat if they dealt him. Much more likely they'd dangle Arrington (injury and contract would certainly scare folks away) as Williams Scheme does seem to be avg Joe friendly...ala Lamar Marshall. Someone did hit it on the head with Gardner though. He drops a bunch of catchable balls for each highlight reel catch. You have to believe the Vikes are desperate to get someone in and I'd be ecstatic with a 3rd round pick for him. Any thoughts on Walt Harris being able to step up and play on an island? They also have a nice 2nd year guy who played Randy Moss well last season in his first start as a pro-Garnell Wilds.
