CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Jets head coach Rex Ryan said today the recent snapping miscues by long snapper Tanner Purdum were "concerning."

But the team no longer has the option to bring back James Dearth. The long-time Jets player signed with the Redskins today, according to a person with direct knowledge of the transaction.

That person requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak for Dearth or the team.

Special-teams coordinator Mike Westhoff was very comfortable with Dearth, who played for the Jets for nine seasons. Ryan acknowledged today the Jets went "younger and cheaper" at the position, instead of bringing Dearth back.

Purdum had been doing well, Ryan said, before two bad field-goal snaps Friday, one low and one high.

"He has to be accurate; it can't ever be a question," Ryan said. "Size and strength, he's not a traditional long snapper."
