What is "irreplacable" about him is that re-signing him means we don't have to worry about the ILB position until Bart Scott starts getting up there in age. It allows us the flexibility to improve at other positions in the draft, such as RT, DE, OLB, WR, RB, and perhaps CB (if Cromartie signs elsewhere). Keeping him ensures we continue to have the best ILB duo in the NFL for at least a few more years.

You value that that much?

1. Scott is in his prime right now.

2. It actually hurts our ability to improve other positions because we have something like 32+ million tied into starting linebackers. That is excessive. Linebackers are not such a big deal that their salaries eat up that much space, and if we are spending 8 million then it should be at least put into a pass rusher.

3. You completely ignore how easy it can be to manufacture production from the LB position in a 3-4/this D.

4. We're going to need a whole new DL soon. If Gholston impresses this year we have a total of 2/3 guys I could see being on the roster in 2-3 years (Gholston, DeVito, maybe Pito). Lets see...8 million a year to our 3rd best linebacker oooooooor improving the meat of the D...hmmmmmmmm.....

Never ignore that this is a business...I'm simply thinking of the economics here and it doesn't point to Harris being rewarded a big contract by the Jets...the Giants, Bills, Chargers, or whoever can afford Harris because their LB situation sucks...ours doesn't and won't under Rex...I really do expect Westerman to be our other starting ILB in 2012.

Harris would have been signed already if they wanted it done...IMO.

SenorGato, he would have been done already. There is a problem with the CBA however. If the Jets were to sign harris this year they would have to guarantee something like 95% of his contract.

Both sides have said they understand this and will wait until next year

Yep. Depending on the pricetag, there's still a pretty good chance we get this deal done. The motivation is ahead of Harris right now so expect him to bring it every week (not that he wouldn't under normal circumstances).

Extending Harris right now doesn't make any sense for Harris under the current rules and both him and his agent have said so publicly. So has Tannenbaum.

With the 30% rule based on 2009 salary and Harris making less than a $1 mil last year IIRC, his extension would probably be the worst ever. There is no way he could get Scott like money ($8 mil per on 4 or 5 yr deal). He has to wait till next year.

With that, the Jets would still be in a position to extend him once the 30% rule goes away.
