Jets’ Shonn Greene: NFL Lockout Talks ‘Are Going Great’

June 16, 2011 9:51 AM

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) – With negotiations likely completed for the week, NFL owners are setting sights on their upcoming meeting in Chicago.

Jets running back Shonn Greene is looking beyond then — with optimism — toward getting back to work.

“That’s exactly what I’m hearing, that they’re in discussions now and the talks are going great between the two parties,” Greene told WFAN’s Craig Carton and Carl Banks on Thursday morning. “I think that’s a positive note, coming from where it was a few weeks ago.”

The labor impasse has cost the league and some teams advertising and sponsorship money, and some players have not collected workout bonuses. At least seven teams, including the Jets, have instituted pay cuts or furloughs of employees who are not players.

“I think it’s only the top echelon of players that are not going to be damaged or hurt in regards to the lockout,” said Greene. “For a lot of players, we got to be smart and manage our money very well.”

According to Greene, “38 or 39″ players, led by Mark Sanchez, were in action for three days of workouts at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Unable to work out at the facility because of the lockout, it was the first time the Jets players have gotten together as a large group since the end of last season.

“The teams that get together and do these little workouts and just try to get the guys together,” he said, “are going to benefit a lot from it.”

As for the question on every Jets fans’ mind: is Gang Green ready to make a run to the promised land?

“Oh, absolutely,” said Greene. “When you’re right there two years in a row, you have nowhere else but to take that extra step, get over that hump to get to the Super Bowl.”
