Agent: Martz wants to coach Rams this seasonESPN.com news services

Mike Martz is feeling better and would like to return to the St. Louis Rams' sideline this season, his agent said Tuesday.

Bob LaMonte told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the coach will ask his doctors for permission to coach again.

"Mike's original plan was to retreat to San Diego and reflect on the future, but he has started to feel so well, walking two or three miles a day ... the bottom line: he feels great," LaMonte said.

It is unknown whether the doctors will allow him to come back. Martz said Oct. 24 that he would not coach again this season after being diagnosed with endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the lining of the heart or a heart valve.

On Thursday, he was taken off medication for the condition.

Martz is in San Diego but expects to return to St. Louis on Friday or Saturday.

LaMonte had a discussion with Rams president John Shaw two weeks ago about Martz's future with St. Louis, and according to LaMonte, Martz wants to come back and fulfill his contract in 2006.

Rams officials had no immediate reaction to Martz's possible comeback.

He's 56-37 in his sixth season with the team, taking them to one Super Bowl and serving as offensive coordinator for the franchise's only championship after the 1999 season.

Martz, 54, was admitted to a hospital on Sept. 30 for treatment, on Oct. 5 announced he had been sick for several weeks and that his condition prevented him from attending practice, and five days later he was readmitted to a hospital.

Joe Vitt has coached the team in his absence.

Best coach in the world.   Took the team to the playoffs 4 out of 5 years! Love how he got ripped to shreds on JI as just about the worst coach in the league at the beginning of last year, particularly compared to our fool. But for Martz, the team's success was "in spite" of him.

This won't be popular, but I LOVE Mad Mike as a coach =D>

I hope the Rams let him stay around.

Look, the franchise handed the him the keys to the offense and he's never failed them...

Sure, there have been some awful picks on offense (Eric Crouch, Travis Scott, ect.)......But he always seems to find a Kevin Curtis or Marc Bulger type to make up for the mistakes --- good personel evaluators do that (remember N.O cut both Bulger and Delhomme).

Now, the Rams defense has just failed them.

They may have the best D-Line coach in the NFL in Bill Kollar, but he wins with 100% effort types.....The Rams only decent starter on the line is Little, but he's always in some sort of trouble?.....The others are nothing more than workout warriors, who expend little to no effort....and stink!

The LB's are big name, re-cycled players, that are merely "fools gold" (good in name only)...

The DB's are OK, but are constantly dealing with injuries.

Hey, say what you will abot Mad Mike being a "blowhard", but who's arguing with him about about Ryan Fitzpatrick (formerly DD.com's top small school QB), who he dubbed the best QB prospect the Rams ever had with him at the helm?

Martz is a perfect example of a flawed coach being able to win in teh league.

That does not mean that I want Herm to stay because of that comment.

The thing about Martz is that he has a plan and he sticks to it. He knows what he wants the philosophy and the make-up of his team to be, and he is good at finding the athletes to fulfill that philosophy.

That is where Herm and TB have failed. They keep changing horses at mid-stream and then going in another direction.

Great point SD, I agree with you --- he makes a ton mistakes, but is able to cover them up on offense.

As RSherry suggested, it's the Rams defense that always fails them.

Even when they beat Tennessee in the Super Bowl, that D was a huge weak link...

Luckily Dungy benched an, inconsistent, yet proven Trent Dilfer** for a worthless Shaun King, or the Rams defense gets blasted in NFC title game

(Dilfer** was benched, because Dungy placed him on IR with a "non season-ending injury" to make sure King would be relaxed)
