Heading to Chicago on Friday

Recommended Posts

My brother is flying in from San Fran and we are going to the All Blacks vs USA match on Saturday afternoon at Soldier Field (3:30 on NBC :winking0001:).

We get in on Friday and would like some tips on where to eat/drink Friday night and Saturday.

I haven't been to Chicago since about 2010 so any tips from my fellow JN posters would be appreciated.

Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company on Clark Street is one of my favorites.  Its not a Chicago Deep Dish pizza place -- they have pizza pot pies, never seen anything like them elsewhere.  If you go, be prepared to wait.  Could easily be an hour wait.

If you are going to be in town on Sunday, a lot of us transplanted NYers meet at The Country Club in Wrigleyville about two blocks from Wrigley Field.  Not sure how big a group we will have given the 1-7 record, but even if its relatively quiet, its the one place in Chicago where you will be welcomed by fellow Jet fans.

Agreed that Country Club is a good time for football, but this time of year when the Jets suck the place is totally deflated. Not to mention the fact that ever since they revamped the place as a country bar they now blast country music at every single commercial break, and it's that awful arena country rock too, it's annoying as ****.

Best brewery in the city is Revolution out in Logan Square. (Goose Island is gone).

Best burger is at Au Cheval on Randolph right at the beginning of restaurant row.

Best steak in the city is Bavettes. You'd have to try and walk in since you have to reserve in advance and they fill up weeks prior, but people always cancel or no show so it's worth a shot.

Wicker Park on Saturday is your best bet if you're looking for a fun night out on the town. The neighborhood has changed a lot since you were last here. Small Bar, Bangers & Lace, and Fatpour all have excellent beer selections.

Don't bother with downtown, it's overrated and touristy as all hell.

Thanks Lith, and my apologies for not letting you know I'm a Pats fan

I'm leaving at 5AM on Sunday as I wanted to be home in plenty of time for the Pats/Broncos game. Will definitely hit Wicker Park tomorrow night or Saturday after the game.

Thanks for the suggestions mate. Much appreciated.
