This is from his scouting report on NFL.com:

Legree possesses the football IQ, measureables, and hands to provide valuable depth as a reserve safety. However, lacks elite ability in coverage and isn't productive enough against the run. Shows very good instincts in zone coverage, peeking into the backfield, anticipating routes, and making plays on the football but does not react as well to the run. Very capable in deep half coverage but won't be a good matchup in man coverage in the NFL. Flashes the ability to be a physical hitter but needs to become more reliable as a tackler an in run support. Legree's a mid-round prospect.

In other words: who cares?

= E. Smith & J. Leonhard

Disagree. I think Leonhard gets trashed mostly because he's a short white safety... same way Welker gets it for being a white WR. Leonhard has been good enough to start for a top 5 defense for 5 years in a row if not more. He also plays the role of field general for the defense, which shows you he has football smarts. One of the main critcisms is that he's slow, but that's not true. He's fast and quick enough to return punts and be pretty damn good at it (if you look at the actual stats, you'll find he wasn't just back there in 2010 for ball security purposes). Another knock is that he can't cover guys like Rob Gronkowski in man to man coverage. LOL.. what safety can? Probably a couple safeties in the league that can get that nod, that's it.

Rex has the kind of defense that basically puts safeties out to dry which is one of the reasons Kerry Rhodes was such a whiner when Rex came in. Also it ought to say something to you the fact that a defensive genius like Rex had experience with Jim Leonhard and chose to bring him over and make him the general of his new defense as well. Case closed.

Smith on the other hand, different story... that's a lack of talent on the roster. He's not a starting quality player... and even if he was, it's not really clear that safety should be his natural position.

49ers Sign 7 to Reserve/Future Contracts

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed C Chase Beeler, T Derek Hall, FS Mark LeGree, DB Cory Nelms, WR Kyle Nelson, TE Konrad Reuland and LB Michael Wilhoite to Reserve/Future contracts.

Beeler (6-3, 285) originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on July 27, 2011. He spent the entire season on the 49ers practice squad.

Hall (6-5, 307) spent the entire season on the 49ers practice squad after signing with San Francisco on July 27, 2011.

LeGree (6-0, 210) was originally a fifth round draft choice (156th overall) by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2011 NFL Draft and was later released following training camp. He then was signed to the Arizona Cardinals practice squad on September 21 and later released on October 5. LeGree signed with the 49ers on November 15 and was released on November 29.

Nelms (6-0, 195) originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on July 27, 2011. He remained on the 49ers practice squad the entire season. Nelms was awarded the Thomas Herrion Memorial Award, presented to the 49ers rookie or first-year player who best represents the dream of Thomas Herrion. The award is voted on by the coaches.

Nelson (6-3, 240) went undrafted out of New Mexico State and spent time with the New Orleans Saints and the Kansas City Chiefs this season. He played tight end for the Aggies from 2007-10 and recorded 66 receptions for 559 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Reuland (6-4, 260) originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on July 27, 2011. He spent the entire season on the 49ers practice squad.

Wilhoite (6-0, 240) entered the NFL for the first time when he signed with the 49ers practice squad on December 14, 2011. He signed with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL as an undrafted free agent in 2011. Wilhoite starred collegiately at Washburn University. He played in 44 games (35 starts), registered 211 tackles and three interceptions, and was named honorable mention All-MIAA, as a senior.

And I disagree with you...

Leonhard has a great football IQ, has adaquite ability, and absolutely ZERO playmaking skills.

He is a "make do" on special teams because of the lack of mistake free players we have.

He is a system success and was brought in by Rex because he was familiar with the D being installed. Now I wouldn't replace him with just any player, and my sarcasm may have misled you into believing that I actually thought he was as subpar as Legree, but we need to get better in both Safety slots PERIOD.

gotta disagree, too

No playmaking skills have sure resulted in a lot of important interceptions in his three years as a Jet. Even his last play of the season, the one where he got injured, was a key interception.
