How would you rank the sports teams in NY based on popularity?

couple points outside of whats been said.

i agree that the knicks are tops even though the conventional wisdom is that this is a baseball city. basketball nad the knicks are in a unique position in sports and in their own sport.

1a - the knicks have the market cornered in their own sport - the nets ARE a NJ team, unlike the Jets and Giants who play in NJ but are NY teams. either way the giants and jets split the intrasport market. The yanks and mets split the market. etc. the nets don't split the market with the knicks...

1b - however, inter-sport-wise the knicks have the classic NYC feel, they are NYC "CLASSIC": the traditional team from the traditional league on the same axis as the yankees and giants (and rangers). on the other axis are all the other teams - each traditional team has its shadow - yanks:mets, giants:jets, rangers:isles.

2 - so they are NYC Classic, identified with the very life of the city, have no intrasport competition and.....they are also perpetual underdogs. here, they take on some identity of the Jets and Mets. The Knicks have always had their nemesis when at their apex (most recently the van gundy era). The last championships they won was 35 years ago. The Yanks, Giants, Rangers....all the teams the are the city's classic identity all have winning identities as well. Both recently and historically...That the Knicks only have 2 NBA championships having been around since the 40s-50s is another significant thing here. The city craves drama, and the Knicks are drama - unlike the juggernaut yankees. what did larry johnson call them?

3a - The Garden is an arena IN THE CITY, a must-see venue. It captures NYC bc it is NYC. Both the Giants and Jets leave tremndous value on the table bc they play in NJ. The Mets are in fricking queens and the yankees in the bronx... The Garden is literally like going to the theater, a fashion show....it is going to see NYC be NYC. Thats where the pride comes from.

3b - An arena sport - esp basketball - is so much more intimate than the other sports. Their are no walls. The players fall onto fans....celebrity fans. The players are fully visible. they dont wear helmets, pads, gloves, or even pants and tshirts.... this is a major advntage in sports and player marketing.

4a - Basketball itself is an urban sport, and NYC is the ultimate urban scene. Kids going to school - or the playground - play basketball. they dont go to the ice rink. its the ultimate pick-up game.

4b - it is well known that basketball has traditionally gotten the best athletes from the other sports. a high school kid faced with a choice between a career in football or basketball....no brainer.. however, the rosters are smaller in bball, so it is more exclusive athletically. The popularity of bball has gone down, but not sure if this fact has been affected.

4c - the NBA represents black culture in the sports industry more than the others. ppl of other races love black culture. NYC has a rich history in this regard.

4d - the game of basketball has become increasingly internnational over the past 20 years. this only increases the cache of the sport in the most international town in the USA, in the capital of the world. There are few cities in the country where Linsanity would have more significance - culturally - then NYC.

when the knicks finally win the NBA title again, it will be like a combination of the rangers winning in 94, the mets in 86, the giants in 07, and the yankees in 96.

The Yankees have been/are/and will always be the most popular and most talked about team, because you either love them or hate them. And then depending on who is "winning" all the other teams are interchangeable.

It was crazy when the Rangers finally won in 94...and the Knicks of the early-mid 90's were just one freakin shot away that one year. The Islanders of the 80's were awesome...The Bills 4 year run was awesome....and every now and then, the Mets, Jets and Nets had their moments as well. We do have it preety good comapred to other cities...

Gotta say I disagree. If there's one thing Linsanity's shown, it's that when the Knicks are on fire, there's nothing else like it in the city. Including the Yanks. Those 90's teams dominated the headlines and the city. The Garden is and will always be second to none.

you realize the Yankees are probably the most famous sports team in the world loaded down with Icons throughout their history. Nothing comes close, and everyone knows it, no matter where they may be from. This puts them on top by default. Linsanity may very well prove out to be very real as to weather or not he can sustain star status but no matter what the Knicks do in the next 10 plus years or even 50 + years could ever equal what the Yanks have accomplished. Dosent matter if this is a baseball town or not.
