Way too early 53-man Roster Predictions

It's that time. Yay! This is obviously very imperfect and way too early with all the camp battles going on, but I'm curious to see who everyone thinks will fill out the back end of the roster.

OFFENSE - 25

Quarterback (3): Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy

Running Back (5): Shonn Greene, Joe McKnight, Bilal Powell, Terrance Ganaway, John Connor

Wide Receiver (6): Santonio Holmes, Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, Chaz Schilens, Jordan White, Patrick Turner

Tight End (3): Dustin Killer, Jeff Cumberland, Josh Baker

Offensive Line (8): Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Brandon Moore, Jeff Otah, Matt Slausson, Vlad Ducasse, Wayne Hunter, Caleb Schlauderaff

DEFENSE - 25

Defensive Line (7): Sione Pouha, Muhammad Wilkerson, Mike Devito, Marcus Dixon, Quinton Coples, Kenrick Ellis, Jay Richardson

Linebackers (9): David Harris, Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Aaron Maybin, Ricky Sapp, Josh Mauga, Garret McIntyre, Demario Davis

Defensive Backs (9): Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson, Isaiah Trufant, Ellis Lankster, Yeremiah Bell, LaRon Landry, Eric Smith, Josh Bush

SPECIAL TEAMS - 3

Kicker (1): Josh Brown

Punter (1): TJ Conley

Long snapper (1): Tanner Purdum

Some thoughts:

--- This was a fun list to make, but it was a LOT more fun for the defense than the offense.

--- Early on, I am a lot happier with the seeming depth of this roster as compared to last year's group. Specifically, the offensive line (if Otah is healthy... please God) is much deeper this year, as is the linebacking corps, especially if Maybin turns the corner and Sapp is able to contribute.

--- The concern units (aside from QB) are clearly three: RB, CB, WR. RB hopefully won't be too much of a problem as our rotation is young and supposedly looks good in camp. CB depth after Wilson I'm a little worried about, but Rex/Pettine have shown they're pretty good at picking up guys close to the season (Strickland, Cole, etc.) and making good players of them. WR is downright frightening, and after all these months, I am still hoping we give Braylon Edwards a call.

--- We didn't do anything to replace TJ Conley? Lol. Cmon.

Looking at the CB's I have to say that I feel less secure than in the last few years with the depth at the position. Let's say Revis or Cro go down for any length of time this season, what we have now suggests that we would see Trufant as the nickel??? That's a scary proposition to me and could see good Qb's or even sub standard guys really taking advantage of him or Lankster. I felt much better in that area recently than I do right now. I trust Rex where the D is concerned, but I am hoping to see an upgrade here.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty surprising to see the Jets put really no effort into retaining any FAs or replacing anyone at CB this season. That said, it probably says something positive for Rex's feelings about Lankster considering the reports say he's been the guy they've had pegged as this year's #4 for a while now. Consider that nobody had a whole lot of good to say about Drew Coleman either before Rex showed up and then, after leaving and signing a decent enough contract, he found himself cut a year later and didn't finally find a new team willing to sign him until just the other day. And yet, the Jets didn't even seem to have any interest in bringing him back. The other possibility is as the OP suggested, they could look to address it with a veteran later in camp, which they've done in prior years.

Agree with both of you guys. Strickland and Cole were great from a depth standpoint, and I was a little surprised we made no effort at keeping either or at signing Drew Coleman. But I think Rex will be able to find some guys. And, the depth in the Front 7 has me very excited.

the reports out of camp, it wouldn't surprise me if Lankster was the #3. He's been doing great.

It wouldn't surprise you if Lankster overtook Kyle Wilson as our number 3 DB? It would make my hair blow back like in that old memorex commercial. It would surprise the hell out of me.

i can't wait to see Hayden Smith in preseason. As a tight end he's extremely raw but as a kickoff coverage guy he might be perfect. Josh Baker I don't think has a lock down on that roster spot. also who is Jay Richardson and why is he making this defensive line rotation?

Probably because Rex Ryan gushed about him for 5 minutes in his presser the other day, usually that means Rex really thinks he is a player who needs an ego stroke to hopefully get his ass in gear, I doubt he is on the 53 man roster week 1, prob PS, and maybe see some PT later in the season when we play a heavy run oriented team.

Big, fast, and strong, it would be great if the Jets could use Smith as a special teams specialist while he learns the TE position.

The talk about John Conner possibly not making the team makes me think that Baker might have some security, though, as a guy who can swing between the TE and FB spots - something Conner can't do.

JOhn Conner is one of the hardest hitters on the team and a Rex ryan fave. I'll believe he's cut when i see it.
