The New York Jets today announced the signing of former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Curtis Brown.  Selected in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft out of the University of Texas, Brown spent three seasons with the Steelers but was placed on IR just seven games into his third season with a torn ACL.

Out of football in 2014, Brown’s decision to sign with the Jets could be a wise one as the team has plenty of openings at the position heading into the off-season.

Sportingnews.com offered the following analysis of Brown as the 2011 draft approached:

Brown graded out very well at the Combine, and his stock appears to be moving up. He looked great in pass coverage drills in Indianapolis, and NFL teams like his height, which gives him a chance to match up against taller receivers. With improvement in his footwork, Brown should develop into a solid starter.

In 34 career games, the 6’/185 lb Brown recorded 10 tackles, 2 passes defended and a forced fumble.

wow.  that's uhhh, so cool.  fun even.  Curtis green.  What?  Brown?  Yeah, Curtis brown.  Should be a good one.  6' tall.  weighs less than Crusher's right thigh.  Has a graphite knee.  34 games with 10 tackles and he once made a guy fumble.  Awesome signing.  Really good work.  Really uh, just overturning all the stones there.  Turning them over.  The stones.  Checking out the rough diamonds, essentially, just....uh...trying to uh...catch that lightening in a bott.....awww come'on!  This is crap!

He's a ST only player.  Took only one snap otherwise.  Geesh.  GM trying to shore up the ST.  It's Feb.  Where's the rub?

He took more than one snap.  He was apparently their nickel for a bit and they were not happy with him. The real FA period does not start until March.  I think guys are still considered under contract with the teams they played with last year, so you are only allowed to sign guys that were on the street.  Guy could be a decent STer and maybe you get lucky like the Browns did with Dimitri Patterson for a year or two.  Steelers were evidently pretty high on him in coverage coming out of Texas.

I stand corrected:

***Warning - Contains BGA spoilerz***

In 2011 and 2013 he played primarily on special teams.  Despite being active, he played a total of ONE snap in those seasons, so he was low down the depth chart even before the ACL.  He did contribute well on teams though - double digit tackles in 2011 and 2012 and six in seven games before getting hurt in 2013.

He did play 84 snaps in 2012 but didn't fare too well.
