Broncos reportedly still want Kaepernick

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s $11.9 million base salary for 2016 officially is guaranteed. Unofficially, the Broncos remain interested in trading for him.Mike Klis of 9News.com reports that the defendingSuper Bowl champions have an ongoing interest in Kaepernick. Per Klis, G.M. John Elway knew that the 49ers wouldn’t be cutting Kaepernick before the salary guaranteed vested as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday. (Elway also possibly realized that Kaepernick couldn’t be cut before the April 1 trigger because he apparently isn’t healthy.)

The Broncos would want Kaepernick to reduce his compensation package to facilitate a trade. Failing that, Denver would look for the 49ers to pay some of the salary.

Much of the final outcome depends on whether Kaepernick changes his mind about playing in San Francisco, and whether the 49ers truly want him around. Unless both sides embrace the possibility of making the most out of Kaepernick’s talents with coach Chip Kelly running the team, a divorce seems inevitable; the only questions are when it would happen, how much another team would give up to get him, and how Kaepernick’s contract would be adjusted.

Now that Colin Kaepernick’s $11.9 million salary is guaranteed by the San Francisco 49ers for 2016, what’s next ?

The Denver Broncos are still interested in trading for the 28-year-old quarterback, but they reportedly want him to drop his salary to about $7 million for this season. If Kaepernick is unwilling to restructure—or take a pay cut that deep—the 49ers would be stuck with him.But if Kaepernick really wants out, and if San Francisco wants to avoid a potential headache situation, the 49ers could agree to pay part of Kaepernick’s 2016 salary as part of a trade agreement. That’s something ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio suggested Thursday :

The 49ers could agree to pay part of his salary to facilitate a deal, with the new team picking up the rest and the 49ers getting a draft pick or other consideration in exchange . . . . Given that the alternative would be cutting Kaepernick and owing him the balance between whatever he gets elsewhere and $11.9 million, getting anything in return for Kaepernick could be the best possible outcome, if he wants out and if Kelly isn’t inclined to do whatever he has to do to change Kaepernick’s mind.

A trade does not appear to be imminent, in part because the Broncos have little salary cap room to work with. Even if the 49ers helped pay part of Kaepernick’s salary, the Broncos would likely need to create more room.Parting ways with offensive tackle Ryan Clady could help, and that will likely happen eventually. But there’s no rush right now.

There could be little movement on the Kaepernick front until closer to the NFL Draft. In the meantime, stay tuned for any potential developments.

If Denver really wants Kaepernick, and it comes down to that last few million, they could just cut or trade Sanchez, and go with a 2016 draftee to be their #2 for this season. If they cut him they'd have to eat the $1M he's guaranteed, but then wouldn't have to pay the 7th rounder to Philadelphia (not that 7th rounders are particularly valuable, but considering Denver's draft slot, it's even more meaningless). I doubt very much they want to do that, but they could just write it off as cost of insurance (they needed somebody just in case of the worst of worst situations where they couldn't land either Kaep or Fitz).

I'm sure it's come up in trade talks between the 2 teams so far, but maybe Kelly would be interested in taking Sanchez back in SF so they don't have to throw their own rookie prospect out there in game 1. He certainly knows him better than he knows Gabbert (but that could be good and it could be bad; only Kelly can answer that). He could then cut Gabbert if he likes, and Sanchez is only $2.45M more ($4.5M vs $2.25M, but they'd also have to eat $200K more of Gabbert's guaranteed $). Denver clears another $4.5M of breathing room to better afford Kaepernick.

Or maybe they swap Gabbert and Sanchez and that clears up $2.25M extra for Denver.  A swap like that would really depend how badly SF believes in Kaepernick (or how much Kelly likes or dislikes Sanchez).
