Jamison Crowder made 14 receptions, tying a franchise record for most catches in a game by a wide receiver. Al Toon had 14 against the Dolphins in 1988. Incredibly, Crowder had only 99 yards.

Coach Adam Gase was critical of the wide receivers. He said they failed to connect on downfield passes because of route-running mistakes that were "fatal to us." He added: "If we read the coverages correctly with the receivers, some of that isn't a problem." He didn't name names, but he was referring to Robby Anderson, who stumbled out of a double move on a deep ball that could've been a potential game-winning TD. Said Gase: "They need to do a better job of executing what they're supposed to be doing."

The Jets made a splash on Tuesday afternoon when the team went out and acquired Demaryius Thomas from the New England Patriots.

New York sent a 2021 sixth-round pick to its arch-rivals in what marks the first trade between the two organizations since the Patriots acquired the rights to Bill Belichick. With two of the Jets’ top receivers failing to impress in their first game, Adam Gase went out and got one of his top performers while he was the offensive coordinator in Denver. With that said, here are five things to know about the Jets’ newly-acquired wideout.

The Adam Gase Connection

Demaryius Thomas has reunited with Adam Gase.Gase was Thomas’ first position coach in Denver before being promoted to the team’s offensive coordinator. Thomas enjoyed some of his best seasons with Gase calling plays, as he had 203 receptions for 3,049 yards and 25 touchdowns in Gase’s two seasons as the Broncos’ coordinator from 2013-14.

Family Matters

Demaryius Thomas did not have an easy road to the NFL.He was raised by his aunt and uncle since from early childhood in the state of Georgia. When Thomas was an infant, police raided the house where his mother and grandmother lived. His mother and grandmother were arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison and life in prison, respectively, for crack distribution. In July 2015, President Barack Obama commuted his mother’s sentence. She saw Thomas play for the first time in the Broncos’ divisional-round win over the Steelers in the 2016 playoffs. In August 2016, President Obama then commuted his grandmother’s sentence.

From Houston to New England

On Oct. 30, 2018, the Broncos traded Demaryius Thomas and a seventh-round pick in the 2019 draft to the Houston Texans for a fourth- and a seventh-round pick in the 2019 draft. In seven games, Thomas caught 23 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. Thomas subsequently tore his Achilles in a December loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. In the offseason, Thomas signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots. He was released during final roster cuts and re-signed two days later. With the acquisition of Antonio Brown, the Patriots opted to ship Thomas to the Jets in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick.In his return to action, Thomas caught seven passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns during the Patriots’ preseason finale. Although it came against the Giants backups, he did look spry nine months after tearing his Achilles.

Caught Tebow’s last NFL Touchdown pass

In the 2012 NFL playoffs, Demaryius Thomas connected with Tim Tebow for what became one of the most memorable moments in recent Broncos’ franchise history.Thomas caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from Tebow on the first play from scrimmage in overtime. The Broncos upset the Steelers in walk-off fashion to advance to the divisional round against the Patriots. The throw from Tebow was the final touchdown pass of his NFL career.

He also caught Manning’s record-setting score

In October 2014, Demaryius Thomas caught Peyton Manning’s 509th career touchdown pass. That set the all-time record for touchdown passes in an NFL career, as Manning passed Brett Favre.Manning finished his career with 539 touchdown passes. Drew Brees and Tom Brady aren’t too far behind and could surpass that mark this season.

Jamison Crowder opened up his Jets career by setting an obscure NFL record.

With his 14 receptions for 99 yards against the Bills on Sunday, Crowder became the first wide receiver in NFL history with fewer than 100 receiving yards on 14 or more catch, according to ESPN’s Field YatesThat’s not an overly exciting achievement, but it did reveal how Adam Gase will employ his new slot receiver in his first season leading the Jets. Remember when Jarvis Landry led the NFL with 121 receptions for the Dolphins in 2017? Well, that’s exactly how Crowder will fit into this Jets offense. Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler peppered Landry with 161 targets – tied for third in the NFL behind Antonio Brown and DeAndre Hopkins – in 2017. The difference with Landry, though, was that he only finished with 987 receiving yards while averaging 8.8 yards per reception. Nine of the other 10 wide receivers with least 140 targets recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards and averaged at least 10.6 yards per reception.

Crowder may not see as many targets as Landry did, but his effectiveness will likely be the same. Landry finished 2017 with 55 more targets than any other Dolphins receiver for a whopping 37 percent target share. Crowder, in one game, saw a 41 percent target share. Landry’s yards per reception dropped from 12.1 in 2016 to 8.8 in 2017. Crowder’s yards per reception also dropped in the small sample size, going from 11.9 in four years with Washington to just 7.7 with the Jets in Week 1.Crowder was what everyone believed the Jets signed him to be: Sam Darnold’s safety net. His “break glass in case of emergency” weapon. His go-to receiver in a pinch. Darnold looked to Crowder whenever he could – especially when the pocket collapsed and he needed a quick completion in the flat.

While his numbers weren’t striking by any means, Crowder’s ability to extend Jets’ drives in Week 1 made him more valuable than any other pass-catcher on the team. Six of Crowder’s 14 receptions were for first downs, including four on third-down. Darnold trusted Crowder in times of need, and he delivered when called upon.

This isn’t an indictment on Crowder’s usage by Gase – it’s actually pretty smart.

Crowder isn’t a burner like Robby Anderson, a bruiser like Quincy Enunwa or a red-zone threat like Chris Herndon. Crowder won’t pop the top off defenses, and the Jets should never expect him to or even want him to try. Crowder’s average targeted air yards over the past three seasons were 9.1 (2018), 7.4 (2017) and 8.7 (2016), per ESPN’s Next Gen Stats. He’s a perfect slot receiver who excels in the middle of the field and can get you the yards you need when you need them.

Crowder’s role on the Jets is defined. Gase knows how he wants to use him and Darnold enjoys having someone there to get him out of dire straits. The key for Gase and the rest of the Jets now is to figure out the rest of the offense.

WR Robby Anderson was extremely frustrated after catching only three passes for 11 yards. He appeared to be critical of the offensive line, saying, "I don't think we're collectively getting a rhythm. It's just hard. It starts up front and it goes from there." Anderson said he's all about winning and doesn't care about individual stats; he said he'd be happy with 11 yards in a win. But he also believes he can help because of his playmaking ability: "It's obvious. I think the world knows what I'm capable of doing. I know what I'm capable of doing. It's frustrating."

The Jets added some pass-catching help Monday, signing WR Vyncint Smith off of the Houston Texans practice squad. To clear space on the roster, New York released QB David Fales.

Smith, an undrafted free agent out of Limestone College, provides the Jets with wide receiver depth at at a time when they badly need it. With injuries to Quincy Enunwa and Demaryius Thomas, Jamison Crowder was forced to play out of position on Sunday. The addition of Smith should allow Crowder to play primarily in the slot, where he is most effective.Smith was rather quiet during his rookie campaign, but he did make some noise in one game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Down six with just over two minutes remaining in a Week 16 matchup, Deshaun Watson hit Smith in stride for a go-ahead 35-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone.

Smith finished the season with five receptions for 91 yards and that lone touchdown.

Smith made a name for himself in college, drawing NFL scouts to his small Division II school. As an all-conference selection, Smith caught 49 passes for 849 yards and three touchdowns in his senior season. in total, he caught 153 career passes for 2,371 yards and 11 touchdowns.Fales was brought in after a season-ending ankle injury to Trevor Siemian. Releasing him is a good sign for the Jets, who plan on having Sam Darnold back for Week 5.

In seven games against the Patriots, WR Robby Anderson has managed only 15 catches for 169 yards and no TDs. He's looking forward to playing them with Sam Darnold at QB, adding, "I've really only played the Patriots only twice in my career with my starting quarterback." Actually, it's four times, but here's another way to look at it: He's had the backup in three of the last four (Bryce Petty, Josh McCown and Luke Falk). CB Stephon Gilmore might have something to do with the slump as well.

Robby Anderson will be a hot name on the rumor mill as the NFL trade deadline approaches. According to The Athletic, the Oakland Raiders are among the teams interested in the Jets’ speedy wide receiver.Sitting at 1-5, the Jets should consider all options at the trade deadline with the 2019 season quickly slipping away. Anderson is the Jets’ best trade chip considering his age (26), contract ($3 million) and skillset as an outside receiver. Teams inquired about Anderson during last year’s trade deadline, but the Jets decided to keep him for another season. This season he has only seven receptions for 266 yards and one touchdown.

The Raiders (3-3) have a shot at the playoffs this season in a downtrodden AFC and lack a true No. 1 wide receiver. After releasing Antonio Brown this offseason, their top receiving option right now is tight end Darren Waller, who has 44 receptions and 485 yards. Tyrell Williams was supposed to be their main wide receiver after letting Brown go, but he’s battled injuries all season. What would it take to acquire Anderson? The Athletic’s Vic Tafur says the Raiders would likely only give up a third-round pick for the Jets wide receiver since they currently don’t own a pick in the second round and have two picks in the third. The Jets have remained coy about their intentions at the trade deadline but multiple reports indicate they’ll be sellers.

If Robby Anderson wants to prove he’s a No. 1 wide receiver, he has a weird way of showing it.

The Jets wideout failed to make an aggressive play on the ball at least twice in New York’s 29-15 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday. Ordinarily, that wouldn’t have received much attention with all the other problems the Jets have, but the two plays in question resulted in interceptions for Sam Darnold. Anderson looked like he was on his way to a breakout game on the Jets’ first drive of the game. He hauled in three catches for 29 yards and helped the Jets take an early 7-6 lead on a 12-play, 93-yard scoring drive. But much like the rest of the Jets offense after that first possession, Anderson looked uninterested and uninspired and finished the game with only one more catch for 14 yards.

Stats aside, the biggest errors on Anderson’s part came on two of Darnold’s three picks.

Darnold scrambled out of a would-be sack late in the first quarter and looked to hit Anderson at the Jaguars’ 27-yard line. But as Anderson turned to receive the pass, Jaguars cornerback Tre Herndon got the better position to make the catch for his first interception of the day. It wasn’t the best throw by Darnold, but Anderson made almost no effort to attack Herndon and snatch away or deflect the pass designed for him.The same thing happened late in the fourth quarter. With the Jets driving in a seven-point game, Darnold looked Anderson’s way once more on a curl out. But once again, Herndon beat Anderson to the ball and grabbed his second pick of the day and Darnold’s third on the game. If Anderson had made a bigger play on the pass, either Herndon wouldn’t have had a shot at it or Anderson would have had both receptions. Instead, the Jaguars forced two turnovers at critical points in the game for the Jets.

Gase refused to blame Anderson for at least the last interception when asked directly about it after the game. Instead, he seemed to deflect blame to Darnold’s passes, though he admitted he didn’t have a good look at the first interception involving Anderson.“That last one wasn’t on [Anderson],” Gase said. “We gotta put that ball on the sideline. We just gotta do a better job protecting that football.”Say what you want about Darnold’s passes, but the best receivers in the game make harder plays for those balls. Anderson either didn’t seem interested in attacking the ball or he lacked the awareness to ensure that if he didn’t catch it, no one would.

Regardless, those two incidents weren’t the only instances of Anderson’s lacking effort in this game. Anderson had Herndon dead to rights on a deep shot by Darnold in the third quarter, but Herndon’s defensive pass interference prevented Anderson from getting to the pass. With that being said, Anderson still had enough separation to at least attempt to snatch the pass out of the air but pulled up knowing he had the penalty yardage. This has happened several times throughout the season on deep passing attempts. Anderson won’t make a play on the ball if he doesn’t think he can catch it. He did it a few times when blanketed by Stephon Gilmore against the Patriots in Week 7, when he only caught one pass on eight targets.

The Jets aren’t blind to Anderson’s effort this season. Connor Hughes of The Athletic reported that the team hasn’t been happy with Anderson’s “cavalier attitude” on routes. With the trade deadline approaching and rumors swirling over Anderson’s availability, the new coaching and front office regime could be more willing to move on from Anderson if the price is right. Mike Maccagnan refused to trade Anderson at last year’s deadline, but Joe Douglas has remained coy despite reports the Jets are fielding offers.

Anderson, to his credit, still says he wants to play for the Jets.

“God forbid that was my last game as a Jet, it would be disappointing to go out like this,” Anderson said, via NJ.com. “I don’t want it to ever get misconstrued or mistaken that my all has been to get us to the top, to the Super Bowl. Hopefully, I’m still here and I can continue to try to pursue and work on that.”

Still plenty of speculation that Jets WR Robby Anderson could be dealt by tomorrow's deadline. QB Sam Darnold, who has thrown more TDs to Anderson (seven) than any other player in his career, called him "a great asset ... there are times when he does really well ... but it's out of my control. I'm not going to sit here and think that much about it."

Thoughts on a potential Robby Anderson trade by the Jets: Don't do it unless it's an offer they can't refuse — i.e. a second rounder. Here's why: It would stunt Sam Darnold's development. The Darnold-Anderson numbers aren't good (13-for-29, 1 TD, but this is a case where you put the data aside and trust your eyes. Without a deep threat, Darnold would have to play on a 20-yard field — and that would be bad. Worse than it is now.

WR Robby Anderson says he's thankful he didn't get traded. "It means the world to me," he said. Anderson said he had a "weird feeling" before Sunday's game, and again in the Monday team meeting, knowing there was a chance he could be dealt. He said GM Joe Douglas kept him apprised of the situation so he wouldn't misconstrue media reports.

The Washington Redskins allowed Jamison Crowder to walk in free agency. Now, as they prepare to face the Jets, they may be kicking themselves for allowing one of the league’s most productive slot receivers to go without much of a fight.

Crowder has been as reliable as they come in his first season with the Jets. He’s already one of Sam Darnold’s favorite receivers, and that may have something to do with how sure his hands are. This season, Crowder is tied for the seventh-most catches without a drop in the NFL with 48, tied with Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey.

Most catches without a drop (charted by @ESPNStatsInfo) this season:
1. Michael Thomas: 86
2. Chris Godwin: 60
3. Austin Ekeler: 57
4. Austin Hooper: 56
5. Allen Robinson: 53
6. Larry Fitzgerald: 50
T-7. Jamison Crowder: 48
T-7. Christian McCaffrey: 48

Crowder signed a three-year deal worth $28.5 million with the Jets and has quickly established himself as the team’s most reliable receiver. He leads the team in both receptions and yards with 42 and 486, respectively. Before joining the Jets, he studied Adam Gase’s offenses and how he would fit that mold. He studied the coach’s history with slot receivers, going through tapes of Wes Welker and Jarvis Landry with the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins, respectively, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

For quite some time, the Jets have lacked a trustworthy receiver who can space the field like Crowder. Jeremy Kerley was the closest thing resembling that, but a receiver of Crowder’s caliber hasn’t owned the middle of the field since Wayne Chrebet. It’s clear through nine games that Crowder has carved a Welker- and Landry-like role for himself in Gase’s offense. Despite offensive struggles, Crowder has always posed as a significant threat in the slot.

With Chris Herndon sidelined for the season between a four-game suspension, a nagging hamstring injury and a broken rib that landed him on IR, Darnold has been forced to find a new security blanket.

Crowder has emerged as a dependable option due to Darnold’s increasing trust in the receiver. With his sure hands, it only makes sense to continue to get him involved going forward. After four catches in the first two drives against the Giants in the Jets’ 34-27 win last Sunday, the targets stopped coming for Crowder. That should change on Sunday. The Redskins have struggled against the slot all season and with the defense’s inability to get off the field on third down, Darnold will surely be targeting his new favorite receiver in his return back to Washington this weekend.

Newly-signed WR Josh Doctson is another body at a position that could see major change. Right now, the only certainty is Jamison Crowder. Robby Anderson is headed to free agency (and likely out the door). So is Demaryius Thomas. So the Jets' top receivers under contract are Crowder, Quincy Enunwa (injured), Vyncint Smith and Braxton Berrios. Doctson, a first-round disappointment for Washington, is a no-risk flyer. There will be bigger moves at WR before this offseason is over. Count on it.

Jets GM Joe Douglas chose his words carefully when discussing the future of injured WR Quincy Enunwa (neck). He praised Enunwa's approach to rehab and said "we're excited to have him back," but ... "that (upcoming) doctor's appointment will be big for him." Decision day is March 22, when his $6M salary (already guaranteed for injury) becomes fully guaranteed. Things could get messy if they pass him on the physical and cut him anyway before March 22. Stay tuned.

Pending FA Robby Anderson, a guest on ESPN's "NFL ‪Live," said he'd like to re-sign with the Jets. " l think they definitely want me back," he said. "I truly do want to be back with the Jets. I love Sam (Darnold). I love my teammates, Jamal (Adams) and all those guys. I feel like there's unfinished business there that I've been trying to get done since I got there. I would hope to finish out the mission, all in all, but it's a business."‬ It won't be easy to keep him.

With the Jets placing Donte Moncrief on the practice squad injured list this week, they brought in Jaleel Scott to take his place.

Scott was a fourth-round pick out of New Mexico State by the Ravens in 2018. However, he missed all of the 2018 season due to a hamstring injury. He came back in 2019, but only to record one catch for six yards in three games. The Ravens released Scott on Sept. 5.Now he’s getting a chance the receiver-needy Jets. Let’s take a look at some things to know about Scott as awaits a potential promotion to the 53-man roster.Scott planned on going to the University of Maryland but did not have the grades to get in. Instead, he landed at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa.

Scott’s best season at Ellsworth came in 2015. He recorded 45 catches for 668 receiving yards to go along with nine total touchdowns. That was good enough for Scott to be named All-ICCAC First-Team.

Scott then transferred to New Mexico State in 2016.

Despite starting at a community college, Scott put himself on NFL teams’ radar with his breakout senior season at New Mexico State.Scott had 76 catches for 1,079 yards and nine touchdowns in his second and final season there. That earned him first-team all-conference honors in the Western Athletic Conference.Scott made a name for himself at New Mexico State with his one-handed grabs.

The one that stands out from the rest came against Arizona State in 2017. Scott made a one-handed, 15-yard touchdown grab in the back corner of the end zone. It was a Sportcenter Top 10 worthy catch.

Even at 6-foot-5 and 209 pounds, Scott has decent speed.Scott ran a 4.56 second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in 2018. His speed, combined with his playmaking ability, obviously caught the Ravens’ eye in the 2018 NFL Draft, as they used a fourth-round pick on him.The injury bug moved him down on the Ravens’ depth chart though, which ultimately led to his release.

No Jets player has performed better than receiver Breshad Perriman over the past two weeks.

Perriman has caught seven of 11 targets for 155 yards and three touchdowns – two of which were from at least 49 yards out – since Week 9 and has looked every bit the outside threat the Jets hoped he’d be after signing him to a one-year, $6.5 million contract last offseason. But when that contract expires at the end of the season, Joe Douglas will have a big question to answer in regards to Perriman’s future. Though he’s played well recently, Perriman hasn’t been a consistent or durable presence in the Jets offense. He’s averaged just 2.75 receptions and 29.5 yards per game in the other four contests he’s played in and missed four more games with various injuries.

Given the Jets’ sheer lack of offensive talent, Perriman should see another deal in New York, especially given his ability as a deep threat. A healthy trio of Perriman, Denzel Mims and Jamison Crowder is a solid receiving corps for any starting quarterback and the Jets averaged 27.5 points with all three in the starting lineup. That’s only been two games this season, though. Perriman battled ankle, knee and shoulder injuries this season, as well as a concussion, and disappeared in other games he played in. He’s only tallied at least four receptions or 60 yards twice all year. Whether that’s a product of his injuries, the defenses he’s faced or the Jets’ incompetent offense is tough to determine, but Perriman hasn’t been a consistent playmaker for the Jets this year. The season is 17 weeks, though, and Perriman showed he can play a high level over the last two games. He has five more matches to show Douglas he deserves another contract with the Jets, and there’s no reason he wouldn’t be able to do that after his past two showings.

He’s a phenomenal deep threat – something the Jets offense sorely lacked throughout the beginning of the season when Perriman was recovering from his injuries. He caught this 49-yard bomb from Joe Flacco against solid coverage from Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward in Week 11 and scored on a 54-yarder against the Patriots in Week 9 to become one of nine receivers in the league with multiple touchdown receptions of at least 49 yards. Douglas admitted earlier this season that he erred in his assessment of Robby Anderson, who signed a two-year, $20 million with the Panthers. Depending on how Perriman’s finishes this season, Douglas may be wary of making the same mistake twice. Perriman is a good risk for Douglas to take in 2021. He’s a known playmaker who won’t come at a costly price.

Don’t look now, but the Jets may have finally drafted a potential star wide receiver.

New York has swung and missed on numerous receivers within the last decade. Stephen Hill never had the hands to play in the NFL. Devin Smith turned out to be a one-trick pony with his speed — and injury-prone. Shaq Evans, Jalen Saunders and ArDarius Stewart flopped, badly. Chad Hansen shined in small spurts, but nothing more. For those counting at home, that’s six failed wide receiver experiments by way of the draft.

Denzel Mims is here to buck that trend in a big way.

Mims is only four games into his Jets’ tenure, but he has already shown enough to indicate that he is a star in the making. That’s awfully lofty praise for a 23-year-old whose career got off to a fortuitous start because of injuries, but the film doesn’t lie. There’s a reason why New York was so excited when Mims fell into its lap in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He shined at Baylor thanks to his elite athleticism, solid speed and crisp route running. All of those traits have been on display early in his professional career. Against the Chargers in Week 11, Mims outlined how much of a handful he could be for opposing defenses, catching passes in traffic and drawing multiple defensive pass interference penalties downfield after toasting Los Angeles’ secondary.

“Anytime you’ve got a guy that can go up and get it and has speed at the same time — you can tell those guys [the Chargers defense] were trying to make sure he didn’t get over the top,” Adam Gase said after the game, per NorthJersey.com’s Andy Vasquez. “He got behind them a couple of times. And then there were a couple of times when he just had to box them out and go get it. Hopefully, we can just keep developing that and finding ways to get him the ball down the field.”Thirteen catches for 217 yards through four games might not be the most impressive stat line in the world, but Mims’ production is primed for an uptick as he continues to establish himself as a top option in Gase’s passing attack. Since making his debut against the Bills in Week 7, Mims’ snap count has increased from 79% of New York’s offensive snaps to 96% against the Chiefs and Patriots. He has also been targeted at least seven times in three of four games and is the first player in franchise history to post over 40 receiving yards in each of his first four games.

Regardless of who is calling the plays or who is under center, Mims has found ways to produce and establish himself as a reliable target. It’s not often a rookie accomplishes that with a fluctuating quarterback situation and a coaching staff known for making questionable decisions, but Mims has managed to thrive amid all the chaos.Joe Douglas landed himself a talented player in Mims. New York’s front office has plenty of questions to answer this offseason, but Douglas and company can take solace in knowing that they unearthed a gem in Big 12 country. Mims isn’t just in the Big Apple to take part, he’s there to take over and become one of the best receivers in football.

And that should terrify the rest of the AFC.

Rich Cimini  ESPN Staff Writer

Rookie WR Denzel Mims said it was "pretty tough" to sit out last Sunday even though he wasn't injured: "I watched them play a very good team. It was tough seeing that. I wish I was there." Mims was out of NJ from Tuesday to Friday to tend to a family matter. As a result, he was out of the COVID-19 protocol. He returned to practice today and will play Sunday.
