GM dept. - Mike Maccagnan's 4 biggest mistakes as Jets GM ( ? ) ~ ~ ~

On his first day in New York, new general manager Joe Douglas explained his simple philosophy for building championship-caliber teams: It all starts with the quarterback, followed closely by the offensive and defensive lines.

Douglas learned that philosophy in Baltimore and Philadelphia, where both teams won Super Bowls thanks to impressive quarterback play and stability in the trenches. Now, he’ll be tasked with rebuilding a Jets franchise that hasn’t made the playoffs in almost a decade. “Football is a game of wills,” Douglas told reporters. “We’re going to try to build a team that can impose their will on other teams and to do that you have to be strong up front.”

Luckily for Douglas, the Jets might already have two of the three positions covered. Darnold looks like a potential franchise quarterback after an impressive rookie season and the defensive line appears stable with Leonard Williams, Henry Anderson and 2019 first-round pick Quinnen Williams.

The Jets have a lot invested in their quarterback and defensive line, but they still have work to do on the offensive line. New York traded for two-time Pro Bowl guard Kelechi Osemele before free agency, but there are still lots of question marks on the line, especially at the center and right tackle positions.Once he’s evaluated the entire roster, Douglas could begin his search to rebuild the team as early as this offseason. As he so eloquently said in his press conference, “the hunt never stops for players.”

“There’s a lot of different avenues to improve your roster,” Douglas said. “The draft, unrestricted free agency are some of the highlighted avenues, but I think there’s many more.”

As offseason workouts roll on, there are plenty of disgruntled players seeking new contracts. Douglas could find his building blocks through smart trades for players like Redskins’ tackle Trent Williams, who is unhappy in Washington. Douglas also mentioned heavily utilizing the team’s No. 3 waiver claim to find bargain players before the season.Whatever routes he takes, Douglas will have the full collaborative support of Adam Gase. The two built a “special bond” during their time together in Chicago, and Douglas is excited to work with Gase once more in a much bigger capacity.

“We share a vision of building a team, and I look forward to partnering with him and getting this program to a place where we’re consistently for championships each and every year,” Douglas said. “We’re going to find passionate people that love the game of football, that hate losing more than they love winning, that love to prepare, that love to practice, that love to compete.”

First acquisition for GM Joe Douglas: The Jets have claimed CB Montrel Meander on waivers from the Raiders. He has ties to DC Gregg Williams, as he spent 12 weeks on the Browns' 2018 practice squad. First of many waiver pick-ups for Douglas.

Bears executive Champ Kelly is under serious consideration for a prominent role in the Jets' front office, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports. Kelly, the Bears' assistant director of player personnel, interviewed for the GM job that went to Joe Douglas. Kelly and Douglas worked together in Chicago, so there's familiarity. Kelly also knows Adam Gase from years together in Denver. Indications are that Kelly could have the title of assistant GM. ESPN's Todd McShay has withdrawn from consideration, per Mortensen.

When the Jets hired former Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas to be the team’s new general manager, the move was generally praised for the “refreshing clarity” the hire provided for the organization. Now you can add Jay Glazer to the list of people who approve of the move.

Here’s what Glazer had to say in his latest mailbag about the Jets hiring Douglas :

"I think it’s taken the Jets a long time to get anything right … and with Joe Douglas, they got it right. He’s a grunt. Joe drove up the price, and rightfully so; it wasn’t a great opening. Now you have two guys in Adam Gase and Joe Douglas — Joe’s job is to get players Adam is going to use.“They got the guy who they thought was the right pick for them and Sam Darnold in Adam Gase. As it turns out, they also got one of the better personnel guys in the league with Joe Douglas. Joe is the type of guy who you want to go in and go to work with every day. A lot of these guys get the job as GM and they change. I’ve seen a lot of guys become general managers and lose their freaking minds. It sucks to go to work with those guys every day and all of a sudden they crash and burn and realize they should have just done it by being themselves. Joe Douglas is not going to change; he is going to be the same dude.”

Douglas was formally introduced as the Jets’ GM on Tuesday after being hired last Friday. The new GM is said to already have a special bond and a shared vision with head coach Adam Gase.

Jets GM Joe Douglas is hiring former Colts VP of player personnel Rex Hogan as assistant GM, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. This is a surprise because Bears executive Champ Kelly had been considered the favorite. Douglas has no background with Hogan, but Hogan is familiar with some of the roster because he was the Jets' director of college scouting from 2015 to 2017 under ex-GM Mike Maccagnan — the Leo Williams/Darron Lee/Jamal Adams drafts. Douglas also is hiring longtime personnel man Phil Savage as a senior adviser and Chad Alexander (Ravens) as director of player personnel, per Schefter.

Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta noticed something interesting about some of the Jets’ biggest front office hires this offseason.

Jets GM Joe Douglas, special adviser Phil Savage and director of player personnel Chad Alexander all played key roles in the Ravens’ organization over the last two decades. When he saw the moves New York was making, DeCosta all but endorsed the hirings.“I am not in their building but I respect the Jets organization,” DeCosta said in an interview with Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun. “They have added exceptional football guys.”Douglas spent his first 14 years in the NFL as an area scout for the Ravens. Savage served in various personnel roles in the late 1990s and early 2000s and Alexander spent the past 20 years with the Ravens, the past nine as the team’s assistant director of pro and college personnel. All three worked closely with legendary GM Ozzie Newsome, who helped turn the Ravens into perennial contenders in the AFC North.

Douglas will lead the Jets into the future, but Savage and Alexander will play key roles in finding the right talent to turn New York around. “Joe is an excellent scout. When he speaks, people listen. He doesn’t talk a lot, but he is smart and commands respect when he does speak,” DeCosta said. “When he talks, it carries a lot of weight. He was trained really well by Ozzie and always has a good overall picture. He knows a good football player when he sees one.

Phil is a great football man with tremendous skills in a lot of different areas. Chad was extremely loyal, extremely hardworking. He was great in the community and a great family man. Another guy who started out in college but worked a lot in pro personnel. He is a good evaluator and in finding talent on other teams, other rosters, through free agency. He had a really good feel for finding other players who fit our team. I hate to lose a guy like Chad, who was a great friend to me and many in the department.”The Jets aren’t the Ravens, but if they were to emulate an organization’s front office formula, it would be Baltimore’s. They’ve drafted impeccably over the past decade and have won less than seven games only twice in the past 15 years. Douglas and Alexander played huge roles in drafting some of the Ravens biggest stars including Terrell Suggs, Michael Oher, Joe Flacco, Ladarius Webb, and current Jets Kelechi Osemele and C.J. Mosley.

The same could not be said for the Jets, who haven’t made the playoffs in almost a decade, haven’t had a winning record since 2015.However, all of the moves in the front office and on the roster could make the Jets an intriguing team in 2019. With a new coach, general manager, a rising quarterback star and a plethora of new weapons, the Jets have the opportunity to surprise people this upcoming season.“If you add some players and make a couple of good moves, you can turn things around quickly,” DeCosta said. “Some teams that didn’t do well last year will come up and surprise people this season, and some who won last year will struggle this season. That’s the beauty of this league. That’s what makes the NFL fun.”
