Runyans Value

What would you consider a fair market value offer to Runyan? I'm hoping the Jets are offering no more than 4 mil per season for two seasons. I know the cap situation is great but thats no reason to overpay IMO.

Heres the Daily News article saying the Jets have made an offer and are awaiting a response from Runyan.

Jets closer to Eagles OT Runyan

Jon Runyan may change his shade of green and move up Jersey Turnpike to sign free-agent deal with Jets.

The Jets were awaiting a decision last night from free-agent right tackle Jon Runyan, who appeared to be leaning toward the Jets over re-signing with the Eagles.

If the Jets land Runyan, widely regarded as the top offensive lineman still on the market, it would be their most expensive offseason addition - and it might shed some light on their draft plans.

With Runyan (6-7, 330) and Adrian Jones, who finished last season at left tackle, the Jets would seem less inclined to pick Virginia left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson with the fourth overall choice.

The other non-quarterback near the top of many draft boards is North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams. The Jets already have signed a defensive end, former Steeler Kimo von Oelhoffen, and they still have a lot invested in Shaun Ellis.

By addressing both lines in free agency, the Jets might be thinking quarterback with the fourth pick. The Jets have arranged a private workout with Texas' Vince Young, who reportedly will audition for team officials on Monday. They probably will have private sessions with USC's Matt Leinart and Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler, the other top quarterback prospects.

With about $20 million in cap room, the Jets have made a lucrative offer to the 32-year-old Runyan. His agent, Ben Dogra, said he was engaged in discussions with the Jets and Eagles. As of late afternoon, Runyan hadn't made a decision, Dogra said.

"Coach (Eric) Mangini and his staff made an excellent impression on Jon," Dogra said in an E-mail. "Philly has been home for Jon for a long time, and that makes it a difficult decision for him."

Runyan didn't return a message on his cell phone. On Wednesday night, he said he wasn't expecting the Eagles to make a competitive offer. Runyan, an Eagle since 2000, might be on the downside of his career, but he's still considered a strong run blocker.

Jets fans are overrating his value - he's good but slightly better than Fabini at best. The guy was suffering breakdowns in Philly and there's a reason why they are letting him walk.

Like Ramsey, Van Olhoffen, Runyan is a stop gap player at position of need.

I agree bit, he is a stop gap...but what would be a fair price in your opinion?

Please do not pass on Mario just because you have Ellis and Kimo..not liking that logic at all...neither can be considered speed rushers or game breakers

of all the exciting positions drafted, the DE is tops. if they get williams, they have to go to camp and battle it out. if williams

beats kimo, then sorry kimo dont cry take it like a man youll be a great back up

yes and on the same note ...

please do not pass on Brick just beacuse you have Runyan and Jones

please do not pass on Cutler just because you have Chad and Ramsey

et cetera.

AirForce i think the 3-4mil range is a fair price - it's almost impossible to find good OT on the open market and the only reason the Jets are in the hunt is because Runyan doesn't want to move far from his South Jersey home, so that leaves three possible suitors the Jets, the Ravens and the Eagles (the Giants don't need an RT).

The Eagles don't seem all that interested in retaining him and no other team has invited him in for an interview, like von Oelhoffen.

I agree with the first one. You do not pass on Brick because we theorectically have signed Runyan. Jones is a mediocre LT to begin with and is better suited to play an OG position. That being said if you draft D'Brick you could always move Jones to the inside as he is still young and the learning curve would still be there.

I don't agree with the second notion, however. You can pass on Cutler because you do have Chad and Ramsey. If you take Cutler you are investing a lot of money and a lot of time into him. If he does not pan out and say he is a huge bust, then you have put yourself into a corner both financially and talent wise. If cCutler comes out and stinks up the join and you have let Ramsey go and all you have is Chad and Brooks then you are looking at multiple losing season and setting ourselves back anywhere 3-5 years. There is a huge risk at taking a QB you think is the future of your franchise, especially when he doesn't pan out. (ie Detroit with Harrington) Do you want to take Cutler with the chance he makes us Lions-esque? I certainly don't.

agreed. build core of players this year-- get fa qb next year when available players will (hopefully) see the jets as a franchise on the rise.

Draft for the Lines.

It would be great to take a QB, but build teh trenches in FA and the draft. That will keep us competitative, at least. We will be able to play slug-it-out football. The QB spot is not as big a need as fixing both lines, IMO.
