Mets: 6-5

Yanks: 4-5

THEEEEEEEEEEEEE-E-E-E-E YANKEEEEES SUCK! THEEEEE YANKEES SUCK!

Maybe they can go out and sign someone to come in and lead the team because it's painfully obvious that Derek Jeter can't do it. Thurman Munson would spit on this pathetic group of quitters and mercenaries. Don't they have any pride? Where's Paul O'Neill when you need him?

Jeter closest we have to modern-day JackieBy Gary Gillette

Sheffield talks after altercation with fan

It is a severe understatement to say that there is no way any modern baseball player can have the impact on American society or on the course of history that Jackie Robinson did.

A few second basemen today display some similarities to Robinson, but the only active regular second baseman who is even remotely comparable would be Ray Durham. And while Durham is an All-Star and a fine player in his own right, he's not at Robinson's level.

Jeter

Robinson

When we look around for a modern-day Jackie Robinson, one player stands out: Derek Jeter. In many ways, the parallels between the careers of these two great middle infielders are striking. Here's a look:

Faba comes through again. I'm gonna start calling this guy "the genie."

As for that article, what a bunch of ridiculous tripe. Jeter walked into the major leagues slap-hitting his way to a .320 average while having zero pressure on him to "lead" a team. The Yanks have ALWAYS been Tino's team or Paul O'Neill's team or Bernie Williams's team. When it hasn't been those guys it's been the $80 million dollars invested in that pitching staff. NEVER has it been Derek Jeter's JOB to carry the Yankees. He is a nice, complementary player, but the Yankees are winning 4 rings with Nomar there or with ARod there or with Placido Polanco there. Ridiculous. And that article is a direct slap in the face to Jackie Robinson who did what he did while carrying the weight of not only EVERY African-American in the country, but while carrying the weight of History on his back. Do you want to tell me that Derek, coming up in '96 to coattail his way to the World Series while nailing Mariah Carey carried that kind of pressure? Never!

And as for Jeter as "the leader" of the Yanks team, what has he led them to since O'Neill and Brosius have been gone? Nowhere! Where was Derek when the sh*t was hitting the fan in Boston the other night after Sheffield tried to go hand-to-hand with half of Boston? I'll tell you where. He was in the same spot he was in in '99 when "his team" was brawling with the Mariners in an UGLY fight: standing off to the side laughing with his boy ARod. Some leader.

If he's such a leader how come the Yanks--despite having the highest payroll BY FAR over the last 5 years--have been wiped out by lesser teams that simply WANTED IT MORE. How about last season? How do the Red Sox come back on the Yanks after being down 0-3 with an all-time "leader" like Jeter in charge? Bullsh*t.

Ask yourselves this:

Where would Thurman Munson be during that Yanks-Mariners brawl in '99?

Where would Thurman Munson be after Sheffield almost got beat down in Boston?

What would Thurman Munson be doing after the Yanks get plunked FIVE TIMES in Boston in the opening series?

What would Thurman Munson be doing when the Yanks started playing scared in the ALCS last year? Do the Yanks lose FOUR straight?

And where would Thurman Munson be if the Yanks opened the '05 season with him on the team playing like they don't give a sh*t, playing like they're fat cats who are just going to walk into the post-season and clean up...despite the fact that the same approach hasn't worked in FIVE YEARS.

Not standing off to the side like a little bitch, that's for sure.

Jackie Robinson, my ass. The only thing that Derek Jeter has earned in his time as a Yankee is the right to have deluded Yankee fans blame everything on Giambi and Pavano and Mariano Rivera and Mike Mussina. Never, NEVER do Yankee fans ask themselves why the Yanks, despite all that money they throw around, play like disinterested big-timers who are too good to stoop down and play hard in the regular season. And where's Derek Jeter during all of this? Anyone?

Not to mention the pass Jeter got for being MIA the entire ALCS last year.

Rather than point out his numbers the media just slapped the goat tag on ARod.

Jeter is a wuss, a priss, an attention whore, and to boot...

a choker.

a big.

fat.

choker.

A few simple facts...

In his entire post-season career, a total of 99 games spread over eight seasons, Derek Jeter is a .210/.355/.306 hitter with runners in scoring position and a .245/.345/.329 hitter with men on base. Over the last four post-seasons, he is a .176/.263/.323 hitter in "close and late" situations.

The mighty, "clutch" Derek Jeter has a .210 batting average in the postseason with runners in scoring position.

The mighty, "clutch" Derek Jeter hits .245 with men on base.

Over the last four postseasons the "clutch" Derek Jeter hits .176 in "close and late" at bats....

Jeter is a very nice offensive SS, with decent power, very good overall hitting, and great speed on the basepaths.

He is also subpar defensively, overrated for intangibles that have little to no effect in baseball, and A FREAKING CHOKER.

This is exactly why I couldn't find anybody to debate you about Jeter being over-rated. You're just too good. =D>

Seymour you are way too arrogant for your own good. You are young, so I will give you a pass.

You say that Jeter is subpar defensively. Yet you and Rob Neyer are alone in your thinking. He won a gold glove last year.

Do me one favor. If you do this, I will give what you say going forward some credibility.

Admit that you were wrong when you said that Nomar was better.

Cmon, admit it. Let the healing begin.

Gold Glove=All-Star nominations. In other words they're ******* worthless. Ask Rafael Palmiero how valuable a Gold Glove is. Please.

And Nomar, outside of his injuries, is 10x the player that Jeter is. If he can ever get healthy again Nomar destroys Jeter in just about every statistical category.

Tom...for the good of the site please stay out of the baseball and hockey forums.

Nomar destroys Jeter in every statistical category? He had more power because he played in Fenway. Jeter has him on hits, stolen bases, obp.

Jeter won a Gold Glove and has a higher fielding percentage than Nomar does.

Nomar got traded to the NL and guess what...he hit below .300. The trend will continue. He is off to a blistering start this season. 0 Homers and hitting below the Mendoza line.

2 words. Steroids. Well that was only one word so I will say it again. Steroids.

Please excuse Tomshane and Seymour, guys. They would prefer Nomar to Captain Overrated because they value extra base hits to that of meaningless, 2-out singles.

A healthy Nomar on his worst day swings a much better bat than Jetes on his best day.

The Jackie Robinson comparison is simply the latest piece of evidence proving that Derek Jeter is the most overrated player in the history of organized sports. He hosted SNL for crying out loud! He seemingly has the uncanny ability to pull the wool over the eyes of morons like the author of that article and Yankee homers. The rest of us dont get it but are forced to listen to it, you Yankee homers should be happy about that!
