My Mock 2008 off season...

New York Jets (4-12)

2008 playoff potential: No hope

What they need to do to get there: Pray that Year 3 looks a lot more like Year 1 than Year 2 under head coach Eric Mangini. Mangini surely overachieved with limited talent in 2006, but the Jets suffered this season because neither he nor general manager Mike Tannenbaum wanted to significantly upgrade the roster. They'd better find some major fixes this offseason. The Jets simply don't have enough playmakers in their locker room.

Mangini also needs to determine if Kellen Clemens really is a quarterback worth building around -- something that was very much in question at the end of this season -- and the Jets have to address a defense that still hasn't found a comfort level with Mangini's 3-4 schemes. And these are just some of the more obvious issues. In short, the Jets need to rethink a lot of their plans.

FROM ANOTHER WEBSITE

A year ago, the Jets approached the free-agent signing period as if they were a finished product, fresh off a 10-6 season and a wild-card playoff appearance. They made a signing here, a signing there, merely tweaking the roster, not adding any franchise-changing players.

Don't expect Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini to make the same mistake this time. Besides, the Jets' 4-12 campaign shined a light on just how many holes this team currently has.

Still, keep in mind that Mangini and Tannenbaum are the same guys who orchestrated a climb from 4-12 in 2005 to that 2006 playoff season, so it's way too early to write them off. Yet one thing they should do is be a little more flexible about their "Jets' core values."

Exactly what I just was saying in my earlier post... I stand correct on my point..

Just posted it on JA, wanted to get the thoughts of those here too. OK, here we go....

Trades:

1. Vilma and a 3rd to Detroit for Roy Williams and a 4th

2. Laverneous Coles to KC for a 3rd

3. Trade our #1 (6th overall) to Chicago for their #1 (14th overall) and #2 (#44 overall) (this is assuming Chi wants Ryan and he is there at 6)

4. Trade Chi's #2 and our 4th from Detroit to get back into the bottom of rd 1

Cut: Barrett, JMac, Ryan, Clarke (wiht Coles and Vilmashould free up another 6-8 mil in cap space)

Re-Sign: Hobson (and move him inside), Rhodes (extend him now), Clement (as a backup), Wade Smith (depth)

FA Signings:

1. Justin Smiley or Stacey Andrews (bye bye Adrian)

2. Donte Stallowrth (great speed, weakens NE)

3. Randall Gay (nice player, decent #2 CB, cheaper then Samuel, leaves NE wiht no one when Samuel bolts).

4. TJ Duckett (3rd RB, short yardage/goalline specialst/insurance)

Draft

Rd 1a- Vernon Gholston (edge rusher we need badly)

Rd 1b- Jeff Otah (hello giant new RT)

Rd 2- Eric Ainge (just in case Clem isn't "it", at worst trade bait)

Rd 3- Jordan Grimes (eventual replacement for Moore)

Rd 4- Owen Schmidt (FINALLY a blocking FB who can even run a little)

The Team....

QB- Clemens, Pennington, Ainge

RB- Jones, Washington, Duckett

FB- Schmidt, Tutt

WR- Williams, Cotchery, Stallworth, Smith, Stucky, Wright

TE- Baker, Pocsiak, Dearth, Kowalewski

C- Mangold, Smith

G- Moore, Smiley/Andrews, Grimes, Turner/Montgomery

T- Brick, Otah, Clement, Bender

DE- Ellis, Coleman, Mosely, Brown, DeVito

NT- DRob, Pouha,

OLB- BT, Gholston, Bowens, Chatham

ILB- Harris, Hobson, Barton, Kassell

CB- Revis, Gay, Dyson, Miller, Coleman, Poteat

S- Rhodes, Smith, Elam

Eventually we can add a franhcise RB (TJ is fine for now) and speed TE on O and a NT on D (Pouha seemed to step up towards the end of the year). Penny stays as a backup and insurance.

Thoughts????

Dude everyone of those trades where really unrealalistic. The F/A Pick up's werent to bad.

Dude...no they weren't. Go check your draft day point charts. They are actually pretty damn close.

And Coles for a #3? You dont think KC, who has zero offense right now, would consider that? With hermy there? please.

As to Willaims/Vilma...both are prop bowlers, both are coming off knee injuries, both are going to be looking for new contracts soon. Det has calvin Johnson now and need a defensive QB desparetly. Jets dont want Vilma for the 3-4 and need a breakway WR. Plus they are throwing in a high 3rd in exchange for a mid 4th.

You want to tweak the deals, be my guset...but they far from "really unrealistic".

New York Jets: John Greco, OT, Toledo

Right tackle Anthony Clement has the pass-blocking ability of a turnstile. The Jets need a major upgrade there if they want to keep Kellen Clemens healthy.

We can use an upgrade on the O-line but we spent two first round picks on them couple years ago... and im against spending picks that high on another one..

As for trades... The vikings would love to have chad and coles..
