Coin toss nets Falcons No. 3 pick; Raiders, Chiefs to follow

By John Clayton

The Atlanta Falcons, who won only four games last season, won a coin toss Friday morning that will allow them to select third in the 2008 draft.

Spots No. 3 through No.5 were uncertain until Friday morning because the Falcons, Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs each finished with 4-12 records and each played schedules with a cumulative .516 winning percentage in 2007. Draft positions are determined by team records and schedules, with the easier schedules getting the higher draft seeding. A coin toss is used to break ties.

After the Friday morning coin toss, the Falcons received the No. 3 pick, the Raiders No. 4 and the Chiefs No. 5.

The Falcons had the first call and won the toss. Under that scenario, the Falcons got the third pick and the Raiders the fourth pick. Had the Falcons lost the toss and the Raiders won, the Raiders would have drafted third, and then the Falcons would have flipped against the Chiefs for the No. 4 and No. 5 picks.

Did herm hold a press conference after the coin toss?

"See, that's the beautiful thing about a coin toss. Nobody knows if it's gonna be heads or the other one"

The Falcons are the key to this draft. If they take Ryan, McFadden falls in the jets lap.

Maybe.

If the Raiders release Jordan, which is thought to happen soon with his $5+ million cap hit, Davis could team up McFadden with Justin Fargas.

I hope McFadden does fall to the Jets at six. I really do. And then I hope the Jets rob a team blind of draft picks and or players.

Or they could trade down and look like buffoons for 10 years while McFadden tears up the league...

Or McFadden can tear up the league but the Jets have one of each: a new, giant and athletic offensive and defensive lineman. Or a big, fast WR.

You can get linemen in the 2nd round and there are no big fast WR's to draft in the first round this year.

There are plenty of very good WR prospects that will be there with a mid to late first round pick. Hardy and Sweed would both look good in Green, especially if Coles gets himself a ticket out of here.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Atlanta Falcons won a coin toss for draft position on Friday, meaning they will pick third in the April 26 draft with the Oakland Raiders fourth and the Kansas City Chiefs fifth.

All three teams finished at 4-12 and their opponents had an identical record, the first tiebreaker.

There will be 31 picks in the first round, with New England losing its choice, taken away as part of the penalty for its illegal taping of opponents' signals.
