Share | Email Story Discuss Print A person familiar with the agreement tells The Associated Press that catcher Victor Martinez and the Detroit Tigers have reached a preliminary agreement on a $50 million, four-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the deal, which is subject to a physical, had not yet been announced. Martinez hit .302 with 20 homers in 127 games last season with Boston. He started 106 games at catcher and also can play first base. The Tigers might use him as a designated hitter. They've been looking for another big bat to go along with first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Earlier this offseason, Detroit re-signed third baseman Brandon Inge and shortstop Jhonny Peralta and signed reliever Joaquin Benoit. Martinez turns 32 next month. CrazyCarl40
He'll be a DH before that deal is done at the age of 35. He's not a great defensive catcher. He can rake, no doubt, though. It'll be interesting to see how Theo & Co. respond.
Morrissey
Really interesting in seeing how the Sox lineup will look next season. With Martinez gone, and likely Beltre. They need some middle of the order bats.

Thor99
They'll get a first round comp for him, which is good. Now they have to sign Beltre, and maybe make a play for AGon or Prince.
The Gun Of Bavaria
Tigers still need a 2B and an OF with a good stick.
CrazyCarl40
Victor Martinez is a career .225 hitter in Detroit. He has his lowest OPS at that stadium. It's going to be like Jason Bay version 2.

What about that kid Scott Sizemore for 2B? He should get another look.
