The Jets were in an Empire State of Mind Sunday night after toppling the New England Patriots.

As the team's charter flight descended toward Newark Airport, the captain called an audible and asked the tower for permission to veer closer to the Empire State Building, which was lit up in the team's colors.

"Well I've had an unusual request," the captain said. "If it's green and white, these guys actually want to get as close as we could to see it."

Like an airborne offensive line, Newark's air-traffic controllers gladly cleared a path for the plane.

"You guys are awesome," the captain said. "And I will tell you later who said that."

According to team sources, he was relaying a message from boisterous head coach Rex Ryan.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said it was a fitting end to a perfect night. "For the Empire State Building to be lit green and white was already special," he said. "Then for everyone involved to allow us to have a view on our way back was a great ending for our trip and something that the team will always remember."

The route change that brought the Boeing 767 within clear view of the building required special permission to stray into La Guardia's airspace, FAA spokesman Jim Peters said, but "no other flights were affected."

The tower later alerted the jet as it neared the city's tallest building.

"Taking you down the west side of the building down the Hudson," the controller said. "Empire State Building should be at 11 o'clock."

"It's beautiful," the flight captain said. "Yeah, we've got 200 people looking at it. A beautiful night for it, too. Really appreciate it, guys."

Controllers then directed Continental charter flight 1915 toward Newark, where the plane landed at 10:53 p.m.

"Glad to do it," the tower said.

Moments later, the tower said, "Clear to land for the champion New York Jets."

Asked if they enjoyed the fly-by, the captain said, "We did, and the team did, too. It was great. I know the coach liked it."

Such a fly-by request is not uncommon, but in this instance was particularly special for the controllers.

"It's kind of cool," said Ray Adams, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association at Newark. "It wasn't a typical flight path, but it does happen," he said.

Nice story but not to be a fat miserable whiner.. WE STILL HAVE TWO ******* GAMES LEFT. Not good.

I agree. Looks like Air Traffic Control is gonna be coming out flat this week.

In all reality it just goes to show how little everyone thinks about the Jets. Any other team, they wouldn't be saying this.

Funny thing is I'm not sure how you avoid this. How could you not be feeling like you already won it all, after beating the Pats, and the history involved. Like I said in another thread.. I hope the older guys Richardson, LT, Taylor, and Teh Big Cat take a stand and make everyone realize that this may be their career. Some of them will not get a shot like this again. Get the younger guys head out of the clouds. The crucible awaits and I hope the Jets can stand the heat.

Yeah, but don't you think Rex will let these guys know, that all this praise is indeed disrespect. People are looking at the Jets like the little kid who finally didn't strike out in little league, rather than the kid who can actually hit the home run. Do you know what I mean?

Colts beat Pats...Yay

Steelers beat Pats...Yay

Jets beat Pats...

The culture of the NFL is changing, trash talking is in, Jets just got a monkey off their back, New England messed up, blah, blah, blah

My point is that while what the Jets did is huge for their confidence, it is not the wonderful, great accomplishment that it is being made out to be. It can be a gigantic step forward, but in reality, the Jets have done nothing more than repeat what they did last year, so far.

Everything, and I mean everything that is to be said about this team, that is to be remembered about this Jets season rests solely on what they do this Sunday. This is by far the biggest game the Jets have yet to play in, since 1969. They need to get back to the Superbowl. They need that. Anything less is 1998, 2008 or countless other years where the Jets had a shot and blew it.

Same Old Jets either lives or dies over the course of the next 3 weeks, and I would even go as far to say as the fatal blow to the SOJ mentality can be delivered this weekend more than any other time in the history of the New York Jets.

Any other team...not the Same Old Jets. Until the Jets beat the Steelers, they are just that.

You really don't see the difference? I can assure you, that had green bay been a legitimate 7+ underdog and had spent the last 10 years being owned by Atlanta, including a 45-3 embarrassment just a month ago, and had called this game the most important game of the last 40 years, and partied like it was 1999 when it was over, and was still talkign about it 2 days later, and had one of thier players say it was better then winning the SB, then yes, I can asssure that if all those things were true, people would be wondoering if GB was in for an emotional letdown the following week.

has nothing to do with any perceived media bias against the jets..

Of course I see the difference.

The point I am trying to make is that ultimately the Jets, like every other team, control their own destiny, and they have to realize that what is being written, is simply because they have proven nothing, and nobody expects them to prove anything more. they need to use that as a motivational tool to get focused, and not be complacent. Or they can simply rest on their laurels and be complacent with SOJ. The media's writings and what not should be a wake up call to this franchise, just in case they didn't remember that they have done jack sh*t thus far.

I get WHY the media is writing. I also get WHY the players/coaches need to see it as the warning it is, and use it.

I see..

I guess I think they have proven something. Beating NE like that, in NE, after thier dominate end to the season was getting a large monkey off thier back. They have every right to feel good about themselves, imo..

I agree with you, but selfishly as a fan of the Green and White, I personally can't stand being this close and never closer to the Lombardi. It has taken this team so much to get here. They have overcome odds that are ridiculously stacked against them. It would just be an absolute shame for THIS season to get lumped in with all the other "close, but no cigar" seasons of years past.

At 35, this is the best I have ever seen of my beloved Jets, but I know, I KNOW this team can do it. They can beat any of the teams that are left, if they just play their game.

I am still convinced that this team has not put together a flawless, complete game yet this year. Eric Mangini said it best, when he reiterated what Bill Belichik teaches:

He said "Most games in the NFL are lost by a team, and not won"

The Jets, to reach the promised land, simply need to not lose these next two games. They need to play the way that they can.

I know that they are capable of it, but will they? Resting on their laurels, being satisfied with what they have done thus far, is not going to help them.

They are so close. For a crazy fan like myself, who is visibly upset and a bitch to deal with after a Jets loss, being close is never as good as getting there.

So, I hope that they pull out all the stops. I hope that Rex uses everything, like he did last week, to get these guys up for this game. It's a tough order, but I think that they can. I think that an encore performance is possible from last week. It's going to take every inch of character and determination, but if anybody can get this team to get up for these games, it is Rex, and T-Rich, LT, JT, Ellis, Scott......

They CAN do this.

An air traffic controller and a pilot referred to us as the Champion Jets and that means the team gonna come out flat against PIT? Christ if I knew that we, as laymen, had such an effect on how the team plays I'd be a little more careful on things I say about the team!

I dunno why these guys are arguing about how the JETS play in the next game.

I am sure JETS will be just fine and win the game. After all, I am going to be wearing my lucky underwear!
