Jets immediately refund employees for lockout losses

Posted by Mike Florio on July 25, 2011, 11:22 AM EDT

In addition to the fiery speech given by coach Rex Ryan to the Jets organization on Monday, owner Woody Johnson had something to say that made the employees feel even better.

As previously reported, Johnson said that employees would receive their lost lockout wages immediately.

How immediate is immediate? Per a source who was in the room, Johnson said, “When you leave this meeting, the money will be in your accounts.”

That’s pretty damn immediate.

Here’s hoping the other teams that cut employee pay move almost as immediately.

Rex Ryan is already giving fiery speeches again

While we wait for the NFLPA* Executive Committee to start (and finish) their meeting Monday, we have perhaps the clearest sign yet that football is coming back.

Rex Ryan is already trying to rally the troops again.

Ryan delivered a “fiery, training camp-type speech” to 150 Jets staffers on Monday morning in New Jersey, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

Ryan spoke after Jets owner Woody Johnson, who promised all staffers that lost wages would be repaid by the team immediately.

That news is expected, but welcome. We expect to hear teams around the league to make the same pledge to those staffers who were unfairly punished this offseason by owners who didn’t properly prepare for the lockout.

Here is a feel good story from Rich Cimini on ESPN.com.  The New York Jets had cut employees pay at the beginning of the lockout.  Today the entire organization was assembled and they were told that all lost wages were being returned.

In the early March, at the start of the lockout, the Jets slashed salaries of all employees in the football operation by 25 percent, with the provision that they would recoup the money if no games were lost due to the lockout. Ryan and Tannenbaum were included in the cuts. Non-contract employees were ordered to take unpaid furloughs.

Johnson delivered on his promise. In fact, one employee said his lost salary was already direct deposited into his account by the time he returned to his desk.

We had been critical of the Jets (specifically Woody Johnson) for doing this originally.  So we are happy that this move was made today, it was definitely the right thing to do.

With the NFL lockout on the verge of ending, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson assembled the entire organization Monday morning in the team’s auditorium and told about 150 employees that all lost wages from the lockout would be returned to them by the time they returned to their desks, according to a person familiar with the meeting.

Wonder if that money came with interest? Or hell, why it was furloughed in the first place?

I am glad they gave it back. But I didn't understand why they were doing this in May. Why because merchandise sales were down? To me it would have only been understandable if they couldn't use the TV money and games were lost. That said, it would also only be understandable once the games were lost. Not sure why they felt the need to set up a Christmas Club for all the Jets employees, lol.

Definitely glad they did the right thing and returned the money. I like when the little man doesn't get totally boned over.

In the end the Jets employees pretty much just got a shitload of free paid vacation. It no doubt completely blew at the time, but now with that big make-up checking rolling in I'm sure it's not too shabby for them.

I am on the Jets payroll, but please keep that quiet. So I will say that yes what you posted is accurate.
