The defenseless receiver rule

Totally agree. The rule is a joke.

Here is what I could find on it.

The definition of a defenseless receiver has been extended. Now, a receiver who has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a runner even if both feet are on the ground is considered defenseless.

Bascially now receivers have no fear at all of going over the middle.

It almost would appear to eliminate zone coverage for pass plays. If you separate a receiver from the ball by contact you, apparently run the risk of hitting a defenseless player. The other thing is that it is not a penalty that is consistently called. To the point made by Dierking. It is a horrible rule.
