On Monday, the National Football Post reported that the Jets tried out QB B.J. Coleman as well as five wide receivers.  Here’s a quick rundown on who they were.

BJ Coleman (Quarterback – GB)

Bio: Coleman played at Tennessee-Chattanooga for three years after transferring from Tennessee.  He was drafted in the 7th round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and was released in early September in favor of Seneca Wallace.

Analysis: Coleman needs to improve his mechanics and has been inconsistent in time on the field but he’s a big quarterback (6’3″ 233 lbs) and has good body and arm strength.  It doesn’t seem likely the Jets would sign Coleman to the active roster, but he is someone who might be on their short list if he isn’t added to the practice squad.

Terrence Austin (Wide Receiver – WAS, DET)

Bio: Austin entered the league in 2010 after playing collegiately at UCLA.  He was a seventh rounder by Washington and then was signed to a futures contract with the Lions last winter.  While Austin looked promising during Lions camp, he was on the outside looking in and was cut.

Analysis: Austin is known as a smaller (5’11″ 175 lbs) receiver and is regarded as a speedster with the chance to be a slot receiver and returner.

Phil Garner (Wide Receiver – Kent State)

Bio: Other than playing at Kent State and trying out for the UFL, I can’t seem to find too much about what Garner’s been up to since his 2010 .

Analysis: Garner looks to have speed and could be a potential return man and slot player, but it’s hard to tell much from old tryout videos I could find on YouTube.

Tyrone Goard (Wide Receiver – CIN)

Bio: Goard played at Eastern Kentucky and was selected to his all conference second team back in 2011.  As a senior Goard caught 41 passes for 900 yards and eight TDs last season at EKU and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Bengals as a project WR.

Analysis:  Goard is large (6’4″ 192 lbs) target and his size and stride length make him a potential deep threat.  He needs to add more size to his frame to muscle up corners in the NFL but would be a project player for the Jets due to some mechanics and concentration concerns.

V’Keon Lacey (Wide Recover – Angelo State)

Bio: Lacey played at D-2 Angelo Stateand has since spent time in the Arena League with the Sabercats.

Analysis: I can’t find much about his skill-set so this one is a largely unknown commodity to me.

Roy Roundtree (Wide Receiver – CIN)

Bio: Roundtree was another UDFA from the Bengals this year, but is a well-known name to many college football fans.  Roundtree was a sought after recruit and decided on Michigan over most of the other Big 10 schools.  Roundtree posted 72 catches in his second year with the team under Rich Rodriguez, but due to a knee injury and a system change, Roundtree feel off the map only totaling 51 catches in his next two seasons.  Wikipedia has a large entry for Roundtree here.

Analysis: More quick than fast, Roundtree would project to the NFL as a slot receiver as he is just 6’0″ and 177 pounds.  Roundtree has potential to play in the slot and is a tough player willing to take a hit.  He has the hands and feet to move past safeties and linebackers to find a soft spot in defenses, but is said to need conditioning work to become stronger and more explosive with his legs to beat would-be tackles or press coverage.  He also needs to prove to NFL teams that he’s moved past some drop/concentration issues that came up while at Michigan.
