His picks were awful, forgot about Pace, thanks.  Thats the one he passed on to get multiple picks back in the draft.

when Parcells first got here in 1996 all he did was rant about how terrible the roster was when it actually was pretty good just Rich Kotite was a clueless mf who couldn't organize a 2 year old's birthday party

Farrior over Peyton Manning.

Manning was not only a "gold chip" prospect but he was also the only one in the 1997 draft, on the heels of a sh*tty QB draft class in 1996, and looking ahead to 1998, well Leaf was just a sophomore in '96 so who knew if he would come out after the '97 season or if he'd even get any better.

If a 20-21 year old "it" QB prospect wants to play for you the future HOF coach; his one-time great NFL QB and buddy of yours wants him to go to you; plus all you have is Glenn Foley and a massively overpaid, cap-busting Neil O'Donnell to turn around the rebuild of a 1-15 team, you turn down a Ricky Williams trade offer. It is clear from his actions in his draft trades that year (and inactions with Manning) Parcells would have jumped at less than half the compensation of a Ricky Williams trade offer if that's the best offer he got.

Parcells would not have taken Manning because he couldn't have done nearly as quick a turnaround. He would have traded the pick away to the highest bidder, no matter what that bid was. He got fleeced trade after trade that year like our draft picks were fire sale items. No one has gotten such poor trade value for trading in the top 5-6 (not to mention #1 overall) since then. What did we get for trading from #1 down to #6? A few mid and late rd picks? He didn't care because he viewed the draft as a crapshoot, so in his eyes quantity>>>quality and trade value be damned.

As much as he viewed things that way it was compounded that much further with the Jets getting docked their 3rd and 4th round picks in '97 (and then 1st + 2nd rounders in the 2 years after that) for Parcells coming here in the first place. His presumed idea is if a solid draft nets at least 3 solid players he's got a better chance of hitting on 3 out of 11 than 3 out of 5.

It's ancient history, so it's not something I come back to a lot, but there was no way Parcells was taking Manning precisely because he viewed him as trade bait not a good, instant starter QB. Everything Tuna did and said pointed to his desire for a quick changing of the guard in the AFC East to instantly look like a genius and to stick it to Kraft asap before quitting after 3 seasons. Taking a rookie QB - a junior rookie QB - was not the fast way to get there.

It is ridiculous that there was nothing "can't miss" at the top of that draft. That wasn't nearly the feeling at the time; there just weren't any can't miss QBs once Manning pulled out. There were a half dozen blue-chip prospects even after Peyton declined and that is not hindsight stuff. Everyone knew the players from 1-6 were top notch "sure thing" type prospects you wouldn't find in the middle of the round (let alone in rounds 2-7). There were other talented players but they all had question marks, from Tony Gonzalez & Warrick Dunn on down.

Well most of this I agree with except for one thing.  Peyton wasnt a cant miss QB prospect, no QB is truly can't miss.  A 1-15 team with holes all over their roster is offered 8 top picks, they're sure going to think about taking those picks over a QB.  A position where there is so much unknown and such a high failure rate attached

No one offers anyone 8 top picks; no one has 8 top picks.

I'll argue with you about this later. Game is on. :)

I thought they still were on 8 picks back then.  Thought thats how many picks went for Williams.

Either way, point is, enjoy the game buddy.  TTYL:D

he downplayed the talent but that man isn't stupid, he knew we had a boatload of talent and would be able to turn it around quickly.  he wasn't leaving a young, talented NE team for us for a total rebuild.

I have always appreciated what BP did on the field as a coach, he brought us out of the dark ages but as a GM type he failed us.  his drafts were awful, he cost us BB, he definitely cost us Manning and probably cost us Brady too.  Imagine he communicates w/ BB and BB stays w/ same staff in place, we don't have the extra 1st rd picks, we don't pick Chad and likely pick Brady.  how close we were to a dynasty.

Yes. Therefore if Parcells - who is friends with Archie - said he would definitely take him then Peyton comes out and he's a Jet. Parcells used to say we weren't one player away that's why he kept trading down (getting fleeced at every trade down in the process). He was trading down no matter what, even if the top trade offer sucked.

Parcells was clearly not taking him, to then break in another rookie QB, the main difference between this one and the last one being a weaker arm and less experience in skipping his senior season. And getting Peyton's lumps in would piss away the first 1-3 years of a 3 year gig.

So basically Parcells did what was good for Parcells not necessarily what what's good for the team that was paying his salary. and yet Jet fans critize Belicheck

for refusing to coach with Parcells as his boss.
