NFL awards 32 compensatory draft choices

(March 21, 2005) -- A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2005 NFL Draft have been awarded to 14 teams, the NFL announced.

Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced will supplement the 223 choices in the seven rounds of the 2005 NFL Draft (April 23-24). This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

The following 2005 draft picks have been determined by the NFL Management Council:

it works a year in advance and it works based losses without offsetting gains- last offseason we lost hardly no one and gained Barton, McCareins, barrett, Kendall etc.

next year is when we get the comp picks for Fergie, Jordan, KMac, Becht etc.

Way to punish Denver for violating the cap. Take away their third rounder and give them two third rounders back as compenatory picks. I am sure that will stop teams from cheating.

Excellent point Hasty.

This is why Denver didn't accept The Jets 3rd for Putzier. They knew they were getting compensatory picks.

Jets might get two extra 3rd rounders next season based on their losses this year.

Keep that in mind as we get closer to the draft. Jets may deal a future 3rd to move up in this years draft.

Wow, great point YJF, never thought of that. I love the idea of giving up a 3rd to move up a few spots if it would make the difference in us getting a Jamaal Brown or Alex Barron or not. While the draft may be stronger next year and the argument could be made that we should stockpile picks next season, it is CRITICAL that we get our franchise LT NOW and move Fabini over to the right side.
