Popular Post BettyBoop
For years now we fans have woken up on (infrequent) Monday mornings after (infrequent) Jets wins and felt 'this is it!". We have looked at our young core (e.g., Darnold, Wilkerson, Sheldon, Mangenius, Bowles) and got drunk on the cool aid. We just knew we had turned the corner, only to discover that all we had were pathetic beer muscles and eventually woke up with a massive SOJ hangover. So, what's next for us? Will it be sadness or euphoria? Let's take a look; Most importantly, our elusive search for a QB will dictate the answer to that question more so than anything else. Zach certainly doesn't look anything like Herbert, Burrow or any second or third-year stud but at this point he doesn't look like he's completely lost out there. He seems to have lost that 'deer in the headlights' look. And at times he's shown some remarkable tools that elite QB's have. Credit Douglas for removing the 'he doesn't have the tools to succeed' excuses. Unless something drastic occurs we should know by the end of the season whether or not Zach can be an effective QB in the league for years to come. The biggest difference between this go round and all of the others is what we should expect in the 2023 offseason. For the first time since I can remember we will NOT be looking to fill several drastic needs. Over the last few years, we needed to seriously fortify no less than QB, OL, TE, WR, RB, CB, S, et al. In next year's draft, Douglas can truly select BPA (at least to some extent). In previous years our biggest hope was always how much cap space we had in coming years. Now it's how many good/great young players and how few holes we have. What a difference. Moreso than any other position, Douglas has waved his magic wand and has come up with a plausible, if not elite, OL. He lost THREE starting tackles in a matter of weeks and yet has managed to build a line that is not killing the team. While I was thrilled with the AVT pick last year, I admit the trade was a bit puzzling to me. I thought he may have given up too much considering a guy like Christian Darrisaw might have been available when the Jets selected next. Turns out it was a stroke of genius given AVT's versatility. It was one of Douglas's best moves as GM. Unlike previous regimes, Douglas did not start out with false hope by signing high priced free agents. In every one of those cases the flames burned brightest just before they went out and we were left with false hope and crippling contracts. For once I am sober AND hopeful. 5
