I had the same reaction -- had to look it up.  Its the pick they got from Miami for Bradley Chubb.

So...outside of the pick swap on day 2, which is pretty close value-wise when factoring in the different years of the picks, it was pretty cleanly Bradley Chubb for Sean Payton.

Even the money lines up almost the same, too, though Chubb's getting a good amount less guaranteed (and also Denver was going to spend that anyway; just on different players is all).

This is a bit of an oversimplification - Brees had a pro bowl caliber year in 2004 with Marty S. The main concern with Brees before he hooked up with Payton was his health. He had already established that he could play.

Obviously, Payton took him to new heights

No doubt, but part of the initial new heights was jacking up the number of pass attempts. His yards/attempt numbers his last 2 seasons in San Diego was about the same as his first 2 seasons in New Orleans. Technically it was higher, actually, but not worlds different (7.5 vs 7.3). Higher TD percentage, too (5.7% vs 4.5%) with the same INT%.

Here's a surprise: right away upon going to New Orleans from SD with Tomlinson, a much greater percentage of his passes and yards went to his RBs -- some 25-30% of his yards in 2006; way up from just 15% in 2005. All these years later I'd have guessed it was the other way around.

The big difference was the sheer number of pass attempts, as Brees had come from a career spent playing Martyball. 900 pass attempts from 2004-2005, vs. 1200 from 2006-2007. At an average 7.4 ypa, that extra 300 attempts is where the 2200-yard disparity came from.

The rest of the heights - at least a lot of it - can be credited to Brees himself and frankly Payton threw the ball too much until his last 4-5 years. Even when his DC furnished him with a top 5 D, Payton still had Brees drop back to pass like 700 times. That's nuts, even if it was cool to see a guy throw for 5000 yards more often than Jets QBs would throw for 3000 (and it's sickening that that's not even an exaggeration :bag:).
