Time for Gang Green to Move on From Dalvin Cook Negotiations

The Jets learned a few things about their team in tonight’s 27-0 victory over the Carolina Panthers, and one of those things as that Dalvin Cook isn’t needed in their running back room.  Might Cook be an upgrade over some of the backs on their roster?  Sure.  Is he that much of an upgrade that he’s worth cutting ties with a younger back at a much higher price?  Not really.

Breece Hall missed most of last season with an ACL tear but is expected back in week 1.  Even if he’s not a full go, the combination of Hall, Michael Carter, Bam Knight and rookie Izzy Abanikanda is good enough.

Abanikanda flashed his big play ability tonight as he took a handoff up the middle for a 27-yard gain after a video game spin move in the middle of the field.  Abanikanda has also shown he can catch the ball out of the backfield, catching all of his targets so far this pre-season with 3 of them going for 31 yards tonight.

Meanwhile, Carter reminded everyone was he was capable of as he looked or better than he did at any point last year.  Carter was quick, decisive and also a factor catching the football.  In all, Carter had six touches for 53 yards.  Bam Knight didn’t see much action but his work last season combined with what he has done throughout training camp tell us he can be a solid depth runner.

Undrafted rookie free agent Travis Dye also had some moments tonight that showed off his quick feet and pass catching ability.

Bottom line: The Jets running back room is ready to roll.  No Cook needed.

Agree. But even more I think the Jets treated this as a scrimmage to essentially test OL run blocking, find what they have at RB, and also see who steps up at TE. I think they had no intention of throwing down the field.

Well they ALL stepped up creating some big dilemmas for the Jets. I think Bam is sort of locked in but MC1 stepped up so much and Izzy flashed elite open field speed and skills that to me anyway sort of makes Cook completely unnecessary. I would probably be OK with our running backs even if we didn't have Breece poised to return.

TE cuts will be brutal. Ruckert looked really good (sounds like the shoulder is minor) Yeboah is a core special teamer and a good receiver, and Kuntz is playing WAY better than the Jets expected and his extreme athleticism is very obvious. He is becoming harder and harder to stash on the PS.

Tippmann once again looked really good. Becton looked good. Senat had another really solid game. Mitchell looked good. OL still far from settled but I think we may have the pieces for it not to be a liability

Xavier Gibson is working his way to a roster spot.

To be honest if I am the Jets I look to trade Lawson, Uzomah and possibly Corey Davis before the start of the season and I think none of them would be a major loss.

It is funny, I was posting the article and the Jets signing Cook and this was right below it on the home page. Looked funny.

I agreed with the premise of this article, I thought they were moving on from Cook. But damn he is good and it makes the team better so let's go!

Glenn is wrong a lot. He got way too attached to the 2020 draft picks.

I think it aged very well, actually.  Now that he signed, there's no need to negotiate with him anymore!
