Jayden Daniels declares for draft

KC taking Mahomes was the only one of them that was a top 10 pick, because Reid had decided that (a) he'd gone as far as he could with a game-manager in Alex Smith, and (b) would probably be able to trade Smith for a high pick after letting his rookie simmer on the bench for the year - as of course happened.

Baltimore had missed the playoffs for 3 straight seasons and, surely reserved to a plan of one more water-treading non-playoff season with Flacco, whose time they were just biding until he could be reasonably released after the SB win induced them into that mega-contract they soon regretted. The smart move was in drafting a far better QB in the first place, not because they drafted him while still a serious contender with Flacco at the helm.

Also they none of those who did even take a 1st rounder were doubly without a 2nd rounder at the time, for a team with this many holes on offense (or on one side of the ball in general), effectively making round 3 their first potential rookie contributor towards a SB run that season. Without looking it up, I doubt any of those teams were in need of 3 OL + 1 WR starter upgrades (plus whatever other holes on defense, as well as depth that will surely see the field, too). Not all those starter holes will be filled from this year's draft class (nor should they, considering 3 of them are in 1 position group, and serious contenders don't start 5 rookies all season long). I doubt those teams headed into those offseasons with a minimum of 4 starter upgrades on offense alone.

IOW not apples to apples.

Also drafting Love while they still had Rodgers 4 years ago was a brain-dead stupid move in retrospect, and may very well have cost them at least another super bowl by sitting on their hands and taking a 3-year QB2 over a much needed high-talent starter, like moving up for game-changers Jefferson or Lamb (well within their reach), instead of wasting 3 years of their HOF QB's prime on backups QB2 Jordan Love and RB2 AJ Dillon (not to mention Becton-like draft moves of their own, like Josh Myers over Creed Humphrey).

San Fran also would have surely thrown away a Super Bowl opportunity (or two, or more) of their own by throwing all those picks at Trey Lance - a move conveniently left out of this list - while still a contender with Garoppolo, and only improbably hitting on Purdy saved them from their own stupidity that gets most GMs fired.

Next, I fail to see how drafting Garoppolo was a big boost to the Patriots or any type of smart move for them. They used a second rounder on him, and 3 years later traded him for a 2nd rounder after throwing just 5 TDs for them in a ridiculously brief backup role that didn't even last through just 2 spot starts in 3 seasons before landing on IR when they needed him for a full month. IOW, it was a total waste of a high draft pick for them.

Ditto Denver using a comparable Garoppolo pick on Brock Osweiler a month after signing Peyton Manning, who came off a missed season himself. Might they have been better with the very next player taken - Lavonte David - instead of starting Wesley Woodyard heading into three seasons of 30-ppg offenses? Maybe they'd have had another ring - or two - from before Manning's arm gave out. In his 4th season they did win 5 of 7 with Osweiler, and it could be argued the end always justifies the means when it's an eventual Super Bowl win, but they might have won at least one more, and then in '15 simply used a FA as their QB to fill in as adequately on that offense that still boasted a killer pair of WRs (Fitzpatrick, Tyrod, McCown, Hoyer, etc.), especially with a Lavante David still aiding on defense. They rightly let Osweiler go the following year, wrongly drafted Paxton Lynch in round 1 to be their next FQB, and then wenth through 6 straight sub-.500 seasons.

Drafting Rodgers when they still had Favre was unusual, as Rodgers was previously projected as high as the #3 overall pick, 2005 wasn't billed as a powerhouse draft class (wasn't that the year we traded out of that part of round 1 and drafted Nugent with our top pick?), and Favre was already playing footsie with retirement, weakly committing to one more season - as he'd repeat annually - just a month before that draft, two months after they bowed out of the playoffs on another of his season-ending chuck & duck interception games. They went 4-12 in 2005 and Sherman was fired.

If they miss out on the next Pat Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers QBing the team for 15 years? Yes then it will have been Jetsy stupid in hindsight. As likely as not, after putting all their eggs in the Rodgers basket for a 2-3 year window, they'll more likely have then slammed their own window shut to take the next Jetsy bust QB in round 1.

Prediction:

  • if Daniels is there for the Jets and we take him, he'll be Vince Young, Tim Tebow, or Johnny Manziel, and the Jets will be 1 player short with either an OT or WR sitting right there who then won ROY honors.
  • If we pass on him he'll be Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, or Jalen Hurts, as we draft the next Mekhi Becton or Andre Dillard

I've accepted this the way of the universe.

I like this new form of your posts, where we're given the option of reading the entire essay or just the Cliff's Notes (Sperm Notes?) version in bold.

No way JD takes a QB early.  It has to be OL or WR.

However, if we extend JD for another 6 years, then...

First, play Warren fulltime to see if he can be a starter.  Trade back for two picks in the late first round.  Get an Offensive Tackle and a QB.  Restructure and cut the dead wood and sign a quality guard and a WR.  Line has three new quality pieces to add to Tippman, Warren and Vera Tucker.   Daniels is the QB of the future,  Someone like Pittman would make Garrett Wilson twice as lethal.

Have to hit on a couple of draft picks and sign free agents for their future worth versus their past accomplishments.  JD had a great 2022 draft.  Maybe he can do it again.
