Yankees lose Giambi for at least 3 weeks

He was hobbling pretty badly last night. This does not surprise me.

To answer Shelter, Melky is not a power hitter or a first baseman so, umm, no. He's a pretty able outfielder, though. That's what they brought him up for.

The overall OF defense will improve with Melky playing fairly regularly in LF and Cf, while Damon and Matsui alternate at DH. Maybe Phelps gets some DH time also. Kevin Thompson should get the call up to replace Giambi, so this releave the logjam at 1B, and adds a solid defensive OF, with an arm that can handle RF, and speed to burn. He has some pop, but it nowhere near the status of a "slugger", in any sense of the word.

So, while the overall powere potential of the Yankees takes a hit, hopefully Matsui and Abreu and Posada and Cano can releave the issue a bit. Not that Giambi was slugging that much anyway.

The Yankees today will be more vertisle, better overall team defense and speed. But they will need solid pitching to get back in this thing, as the ability to "bludgeon" the opposition to death may not be there anymore. However, Wang, Moose, Petitte and Clemens should be a solid rotation. At least on paper. Let's see them do it on the field though.

I agree with all of this, but the Yankees will have to go out and get a 1st baseman now. Or at least, I think they will. Hopefully we dont give up any good young players.
