11:42PM - Sean Ryan Could Bring Credability Back To Jersey #88

August 16th, 2007 by Gary Grund

Jersey number 88 has not been good to the Jets in the past 11 years. It began with the Jets selecting tight end Kyle Brady over Warren Sapp in the 1995 NFL draft. Brady known by many Jets fans as a huge bust wore #88 for 3 seasons between 1996 and 1998.

The Jets then targeted another tight end in the first round of the NFL Draft, this time in 2000, drafting Anthony Becht 27th overall out of West Virginia. While Becht did prove to be a tremendous blocker, he never had the big play ability when it came to catching the ball. Becht, like Kyle Brady, also wore #88 on the front and back of his uniform. Brady was a good player. He just wasn't worth the #9 pick or whatever it was. We only took Becht in 2000 b/c Jax matched the transition tag amt for Brady in '99. The guy is still in the friggin' league entering his 13th season. There were some real busts in that draft but Brady - while far from a superstar - was not one of them.

Yeah, I disagree with labeling Brady as a bust, too. People forget that he left the Jets to become the highest paid TE in the league at the time. He's also still playing. Your average bust doesn't last 12 seasons.

And, frankly, the whole article is BS. Once the preseason's over, Ryan will be lucky to catch 10 passes this year.
