Brett Favre might want to invest in his own cell phone

I hope this is true as its beyond stupid.

It's not as poetically idiotic as Chris Henry getting arrested while wearing his own jersey, but this one's in the same neighborhood.

Remember those tampering charges that the Packers filed against the Vikings? And remember how I thought it would be difficult for the Packers to prove that Favre had made inappropriate contact with the Vikings?

Well, that assumed that Brett Favre wasn't using a Packers-issued cell phone to make those calls to the Vikings. As it turns out, Favre may have done exactly that.

From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

...Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had an interesting bit of information in a piece he wrote about the quarterback today.

McGinn writes that a source said Favre had continued to use a Packers-issued cell phone and that when the team checked the phone records it found

:dohslap:

he may be talking to them but there is absolutely no way he is a viking. the packers will never release him unless forced by the league or goddell. (which i don't think can happen)

unless it's like the T.O. baltimore situation

If this is true then Favre just did the Packers a favour by screwing over an up and coming Division rival. I thought this was a funny:

In fairness to Favre, it should be mentioned that any phone calls he made to the Vikings were made in a gunslinging fashion, and through the entire conversation, he looked like a kid out there, just having fun.

Report: Packers didn't give Favre team-issued cell phone

Updated: July 24, 2008, 9:38 AM ET

A media report in Green Bay is refuting an earlier report that Brett Favre used a Packers-issued cell phone to talk to Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress and assistant coach Darrell Bevell.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette, citing two sources -- one in the NFL, another close to Favre -- reported that Favre does not have a team-issued cell phone.

"One-hundred percent, without a doubt, no Packers-issued phone," the source close to Favre said, according to the report.

On Tuesday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Favre, who announced he was retiring in March but since has expressed his desire to return to the NFL, had used the team-issued phone to contact Childress and Bevell, the Packers' former quarterback coach.

That report followed the Packers filing a tampering charge against the Vikings, claiming that their NFC North rivals had improper conversations with Favre about coming out of retirement and playing for them.

While the NFL is probing those allegations, the two sources said Favre doesn't have a phone paid for by the team, the Press-Gazette reported.

According to the report, the sources said there are no indications the Packers have given team-issued phones to any of their players -- and that doing so would violate NFL salary-cap rules unless the Packers included the cost of the phones on their salary cap.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Wednesday that NFL security staff paid a visit to the Vikings facility in Winter Park, Minn., on Tuesday to investigate the tampering claims. The Vikings could face fines and/or forfeit draft picks if they are found to have tampered with Favre, who is still under contract with the Packers.
