This is what I thought...

It's going to be nice watching Favre throw. Talk about another world. Looked as good as could be expected. Starters looked great.

The starters on Oline looked pretty good. Watch the nfl.com highlights of the Favre-Keller TD. DBrick has Taylor engaged and Faneca pancakes him. Nice and nasty.

Either there are depth questions on the oline or Clemens looked like ****. Possibly C, "all of the above". The backup line had to hurt, but he looked like **** even with the first team. Yes, he was victimized by some drops, but the common denominator is Clemens. Maybe he doesn't throw a catchable ball or maybe while he's looking all uncomfortable he is uncorking it when it's not expected. Either way, he's not helping himself.

Ratliff looked great. Again. I think they could have gotten one last shot at the endzone, but that's my only complaint.

Pace looks much rangier than I expected. He seemed pretty natural at LB and looks solid. I expected him to be bigger and slower. Bowens looked good too. Much more natural at LB than last year.

Gholston looks lost. He seems like after his initial move he gives up and kind of looks around for the ball. It is very early and he is probably just learning what to do, but it does sort of fit with the whole lazy/quits on plays knock he faced.

Marques Murrell looks much bigger than I expected and played pretty well. He seemed to play as a down lineman more than LB. Spencer looked pretty good and is a known ST specialist. I think he probably will have a spot. Kenwin Cummings looked good and might be the beneficiary of Kassell going down.

Ihedigbo looked good until he shanked that last TD. Ahmad Carroll is pretty low on the depth chart. Seemed like the CBs rotated early and late, but I didn't see Carroll getting any run with the first or second teams.

I think I like Chatman better than Musa Smith. He runs every play like it is his last. With Caulcrick would have gotten a carry.

Clowney looked good. So did Henry. I was hoping to see the fade to Henry rather than Ball at the end. Wallace Wright looked good too. I hope Clowney isn't hurt bad, but somebody will get hurt and solve the logjam. Same with QB & RB.

Chatman looked very good I think he will have a roster spot as long as he stays healthy. Musa Smith they should just cut now and avoid the rush, he has looked awful.

Keep an eye on Jason Pociask. He reminds me alot of Jerald Sowell. I know Pociask is a TE and Sowell was a FB but they have alot of the same qualities. Good blocker, reliable pass catcher and very hard to bring down. If Pociask stays healthy I would expect to start seeing alot more of him. If by some chance Bubba Franks gets cut, I could see Pociask as are 3rd TE or even possibly as a back-up FB behind Richardson. Kulrkich (spelling) has been very unimpressive in my opinion.

I would add that Bryan Thomas didn't look much better than last year. The one play he got into the backfield he slowed up before the pass to try and bat it down (and missed). Either bat it down or hit the QB: you can't whiff on both on the same play. Think he also got juked or missed a tackle somehow but I can't recall which play it was.

And David Barrett is just awful at everything. He didn't make much of a case for keeping his $3.6M salary for the year.

Barrett restructured his contract. I believe his CAP number for this year is down to 2.4 million so the chances of him getting cut are slim.

I must have missed when that happened. Still, that doesn't mean he's a lock anyway. It just means he wasn't cut yet. I don't see what he brings to the table other than experience. He's not fast, he's not quick, he gets juked easily, and he commits penalties to try to cover up for it all.

Even though no one other than Revis has established himself as anything, there is:

Barrett

Miller

Poteat

Coleman

Lowery

It's not like there's Barrett and 4 guys who are so much worse than he is. He would have to be a serious upgrade from at least two of those other 4 to warrant being here & I don't know that he is. That's what the summer is for, but more games like last night & I think he's gone.

His restructuring happened within the last week. I am not disagreeing with you but the fact that the front office approached Barrett about restructuring and he was willing to do it to help the team means that he probably won't be cut. Historically, Barrett has always been a player that has gotten better as the season progresses and for a CB he has always been pretty stout against the run.

You can never have too many DB's.

True. The restructure definitely makes it a hell of a lot more likely that he sticks. It doesn't look too good to force a guy to restructure or get cut, then cut him a couple of weeks later anyway when there's less time to catch on with another team & expect serious play time.

What did you think of lowery play last night? I am not mr football vernacular so I cant tell you I liked his technique, leverage ect. But i can tell from what I saw last night I like it. The kid make plays at CB.

Lowery is playing pretty damn good for a rookie drafted in the 4th round. Here's an article for you:

Jets corner Lowery stands out again

BY ERIK BOLAND | erik.boland@newsday.com

August 17, 2008

It would have been almost impossible for Dwight Lowery's second preseason game to trump his first.

In last week's preseason opener, Lowery provided what turned out to be the winning points by returning a punt for a touchdown, led the defense with seven tackles and intercepted a fourth-quarter pass that thwarted a Browns drive.

Lowery had a quieter second game but still stood out in the Jets 13-10 loss at the Meadowlands last night. The rookie cornerback, a fourth-round pick from San Jose State, replaced second-year cornerback, and emerging star, Darrelle Revis on the Jets second defensive position, seeing action much earlier than he had in Cleveland. Lowery's performance in Cleveland, along with his continued solid play in camp, has the rookie making a late charge at the corner spot opposite Revis. Neither Justin Miller or David Barrett have made a strong claim to the job as yet.

"I felt like I belonged," Lowery said earlier this week. "I would assume that most rookies feel like they're nervous, they don't want to mess up, but if you prepare yourself and know that you belong there than everything will take care of itself and you don't have to worry about anything."

I really don't think he's good enough to start right now. Santana Moss seriously juked him - it looked really bad - & if Eric Smith wasn't playing heads-up ball it would have meant a first down.

He's definitely got some coverage skills & seems to have hands (the difference between an incomplete pass & an interception). But I would be concerned if he was matched up with pro starters in 3 weeks.

Well, 4 weeks anyway. I think he can handle Miami's WR's. That improv juke by Moss wouldn't happen on Miami because Pennington doesn't look at the same receiver twice. If the receiver's covered at first glance Chad's checking down.

But Brady & Rivers & Palmer, who they play over the following 4 games, would eat him alive at this point if he's susceptible to that.

I like what I've seen of Lowery. It doesn't look like anybody is blowing by him and speed was the major knock on him. Sure Santana beat him. The guy has been to the pro bowl and much crappier receivers have juked the pants off Miller.

As stated, Barrett restructured last week down to $2.4M. I wonder if it was just so they didn't have to cut him immediately with all that Favre money on the books. I didn't think he looked horrible last night, but I can't see keeping Poteat and Barrett. Poteat didn't seem to get as much playing time. Either he's lower down the chart than we think or more likely, they know what they have and are choosing from the others.

Pociask is a good blocker and may not be caught in the numbers game since he plays FB and H-back. Caulcrick may actually be the one fighting Pociask for the roster spot. If Franks keeps spitting them up it may not be a problem.

I thought the same thing. He is listed as a LB at 6'2" 246. But he looks like he is 260-270. And he looks comfortable as a pass rushing DE. He has some nice pass rushing moves for an unknown second year guy. He made a double reverse spin move on one rush that I haven't seen since Gerry Philbin. :)

We just watched that TD play again. And again. And again. Taylor is used to 105 lb. dance partners now, not massive O-linemen.
