Golfer Erica Blasberg Found Dead

5/10/2010 8:35 PM ET By Tom Herrera

Erica Blasberg, a 25-year-old golfer on the LPGA Tour, was found dead Sunday afternoon at her home in Henderson, Nev., a police spokesman told Golfweek magazine.

The circumstances are currently under investigation, her agent and authorities said Monday. No cause of death was disclosed, according to a spokesman for the Clark County Coroner's Office.

Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul told the Associated Press that officers responded to a 911 call and were dispatched to Blasberg's house around 3 p.m. Sunday. Paul declined to say who made the call since it was part of the investigation.

"At first glance it looks like she might have taken her own life, but at second glance, something is very, very strange about it," Erica's father, Mel Blasberg, told The Press-Enterprise by phone from Nevada. "We're waiting for the police to make an investigation, it's a pending investigation.

"Either way, I lost her and it's impossible to deal with."

Blasberg's agent, Chase Callahan, issued a statement Monday but declined to provide details because of the probe.

"We are devastated to learn of the passing of Erica Blasberg," Callahan said. "To most of the world, Erica was known as a professional golfer, but she was more than that. She was a loving daughter to her parents and a compassionate and loyal friend. Erica had a good heart, was extremely kind and very thankful for what she had in her life."

Share Blasberg played her only LPGA Tour event this year two weeks ago in Mexico and tied for 44th. "She went all the way to Mexico to qualify in an area where they just had a killing, that's how motivated she was," Blasberg's father told The Press-Enterprise. "And she had a nice weekend. She made a little money, she felt good. She knew this year was going to be a tough year, but she was motivated. She didn't seem down."

Blasberg had a successful collegiate career at the University of Arizona, where she won six times in two years and represented the U.S. on the Curtis Cup team in 2004. "She was part of our family for two years," Greg Allen, her former coach at the University of Arizona told Golfweek. "I can't believe she's gone."

She turned professional in June 2004 and posted four top-10s in eight starts on the Duramed Futures Tour before qualifying for the LPGA Tour in 2005. Her best year on the LPGA circuit was 2008, when she began the season with a career-best tie for eighth at the SBS Open in Hawaii.

"She was a very popular player and well-liked and we're going to miss her," said LPGA spokesman David Higdon. "This is a very close-knit group of players and tour and we're saddened by what happened."

Golf.com reports that Blasberg was also one of a handful of LPGA players to earn product endorsements. Puma had signed Blasberg when it launched its golf division in 2006 and she was featured in two television commercials with PGA Tour star Geoff Ogilvy.

"Erica was a solid player on the course, and brought a fresh sense of youthfulness, fun, beauty and energy to the brand," Bob Philion, the president of Cobra-Puma Golf, told Golf.com in a statement Monday. "She will be greatly missed."

I heard on the news that a male golfer found her and called 911 (not under suspicion). Her father is raising questions of foul play, though (unrelated to caller).

Suicide is a very tough subject. Sometimes folks need an outside answer, simply because murder seems ironically easier to deal with. When my childhood friend blew her head off some years ago, I was destroyed. Her uncle, who I love dearly, was convinced she didn't shoot herself. She aimed the gun upwards in her mouth. Her husband found her and a year later killed himself, too. Not sure why I went all personal, but this story is bothersome just because it's bothersome.

Yeah. She lived in FL and was determined to buy a gun. No-one stopped her because her friends down there weren't friends. I found out a lot of stuff after the fact. Basically, she was on Prozac which made her more suicidal than she was before. Antidepressants, OK. Nobody reads the fine print. Or maybe they just ignore it. See Phil Hartman's crazed wife who got crazier.

My friend, Jody, couldn't stabilize and was drinking on top of it. She felt sick all the time. Hence, the gun. It will always haunt me, and it left a lot of wreckage. Her father will never be the same. I kid myself that if I'd been in closer proximity, I could have stopped it. I also know that I'm wrong. I cared for her, and she mattered. I tell her that on her birthday every year. I know how dumb that sounds, but I do it just the same.
