CORTLAND - Rex Ryan has pumped up Vernon Gholston in the past, but the Jets coach seems convinced now that the underachieving first-round pick is ready for a breakthrough.

“That’s the best day he’s had since I’ve been here,” Ryan said after the morning practice today. “I want to see him string some together… This is the most excited I’ve ever been about Vernon Gholston…. Whatever he had for breakfast, he needs to eat (more). That was big time.”

Gholston stood out during a 5-on-4 drill between both lines.

“He stood up (offensive lineman) Wayne Hunter,” Ryan said. “He jacked him up”

Although there’s plenty of room for improvement -- Ryan admitted the former Ohio State star needs to get off the block better -- the coaches have seen some improvement in the outside linebacker-turned-defensive end. Ryan took responsibility for not moving to the end last season.

“I thought it would happen last year,” Ryan said. “But it was a coaching mistake. We put him now in a role where he can be more successful quicker. This is more of a natural role for him.”
