The Rex Report: Not happy with No. 2 D

August, 13, 2010 Aug 1312:42PM ETEmail Print Comments By Rich CiminiRex Ryan didn't use any profanity, but he was upset with the play of his defense in a morning goal-line drill -- specifically, the second-team defense.

"I don't know what the deal is with the second defense, but they decided not to show up," Ryan said.

Here's what happened:

There were three live plays on the goal-line, and the Mark Brunell-led offense (the backups) scored all three times: Two runs by Shonn Greene and a catch by rookie FB John Conner. On one of Greene's runs, there was a huge hole. Granted, it wasn't Bart Scott & Co. getting gashed, but defense is important to the coach of the New York Jets.

In a moment of gallows humor, Ryan joked that it was their "Freeway" defense -- a specifically defensive call in which they let the offense score. (If you recall, they tried that last season against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but RB Maurice Jones-Drew outsmarted the Jets by taking a knee at the 1.)

Other Rex-isms:

1. Rookie S Donovan Warren, an undrafted free agent from Michigan who turned some heads in the spring, appears to be in serious jeopardy of getting cut. Asked about Warren's progress, Ryan gave a lukewarm evaluation -- and that might be overstating it.

"He's been up and down," Ryan said. "Today was a bad day." Specifically, Ryan said he busted a coverage on a flat route during the goal-line drill.

2. Ryan spoke more about the fullback competition between graybeard Tony Richardson and Conner. Ryan was given a couple of chances to say that Richardson, the incumbent, is a lock to make the team. But he passed, saying it's "too early" to make any roster predictions.

Ryan loves Richardson, 38, but he's nuts about Conner. Said the coach: "John Conner, one day is going to be a big-time fullback in this league." Stay tuned on this one.

3. Ryan remarked that he has been impressed with Nick Folk's kickoff ability. He didn't handle kickoffs last season in Dallas, possibly because he was coming off hip surgery in the offseason, but he has been putting them consistently in the end zone.

"I think he's going to have a great year for us," Ryan said.

The Jets don't have a kickoff specialist on the roster (not yet, anyway), so Folk probably will be asked to wear both hats.

4. Ryan talked a little bit about the New York Giants. Remember them? The Jets face them Monday night in the pre-season opener for both teams in the new stadium.

"I think it will be different" than the usual opener," Ryan said. "The fact that we're playing the Giants, and we play in the same stadium -- a new stadium ... yeah, there's a little extra. But it's not going to be amped like it will be for the regular season, that's for sure."Share

I can say this... Instead of carrying 4 QBs this year, I hope we carry 2 FBs. Conner is a pancake blocker and also a good receiver out of the backfield... Imagine Connor, LT, Keller, Cotch, Edwards and Santonio on the field at teh same time on passing downs???

No way they cut Conner after Rex has talked him up. I like the Davis kid just because he's funny. I'm not sure if he has any practice sqaud eligibility left.

Based on his career...Dont think it matters. Another team will pick him up as soon as he clears waivers should the Jets choose to relegate him. Same with any of the 3 FB's on our roster.

T-RICH will retire after this season. Why lose a talent like Davis now? Its time for TRICH to go. Conner can block as well plus he can carry the ball and receive as well. Davis is a pile driver that will wear down defenses. I'd hate to lose him.

Yeah, you have to choose between using a fullback or using a spread formation with more than 2 wide receivers.

Yeah, I can count... I listed the players I thought were legitimate receiving threats. In other words, "imagine what we could do with all of these receiving options on passing downs." I know they can't all be on the field at the same time. Wow.

your exact words:

Only 11 are allowed on the field at once.

Um, ok, you got the QB, the five OLinemen. Um, that makes six. Adding Connor, LT, Keller, Cotch, Edwards, and Santonio puts you over the limit.

Sorry about your small penis.

I'm not arguing over this, I know the rules to the game... Just didn't express myself well in the initial post you tards are now scrutinizing. It happens.

I agree, I'd rather keep conner and Davis too!

Davis sounds like the odd man out of the competition, which I am fine with releasing to carry T.Rich and Connor. T-Rich not making the team would be an AWFUL move from a chemistry perspective because he is one of the vocal leaders of the team and offense. The writing on the wall is there and is clear that Connor will be the heir apparent to T.Rich but he's still got a solid year of production in him

So you admit you were wrong. ;)

I admit I posted a statement that wasn't clear. I admit that I didn't think I would need to go back and clarify it further.

I also admit that I didn't think the low-self-esteemed, mothers' basement dwelling, Proactiv buying, pud tuggers on this site would seize it as an opportunity to "prove me wrong" in attempt to feel good about themselves for 27 seconds.

Silly me.

You've insulted me several times in this thread but I have never insulted you or said anything of a personal nature to you in this or any thread. I will continue in this way. I do not insult you, I do not make personal comments to you. This is the way I have always treated you and always will.

Yes, I pointed out you were wrong. When I was recently proved wrong about Danny Woodhead being taken out for the second Ted Ginn return TD I didn't flip out. And in the future when I am proved wrong I will not flip out because thats how I do things.

First, I don't know what you are talking about with all this "proving wrong" crap about Danny Woodhead. Unlike you, I don't come here to try to call everyone I can out on being wrong about mundane statements. I don't care.

In fact, I find it absolutely absurd that you and that other dork took a simple statement I made because I am excited about having more receiving options this year, and tried to turn it into a debate.

I wasn't trying to be "right" about anything... just being excited.

It wasn't a statement that needed to be corrected, nor turned into the subject of debate. You really think I spend this much time on a ******* football website and don't know how many players can be on the field at a time? Really?

I'm not flipping out either - and certainly not trying to make it personal. I called you guys "pud tuggers" dude... if you take that "personal," then I have to ask... what the hell are you doing on a message board? My reaction to you guys "proving me wrong" is all intended to make a point.

The point? You are both guilty trying too hard to be interwebz know-it-alls and in doing so you are sucking the excitement out of a simple observation/statement... that said, you really showed me.

What you have never understood is that this is f*cking serious.

Rex being unhappy with the second team D sounds like trouble. The question now is: Is Rex losing his touch? Is he losing the [second] team?
