kelly
The '09 draft : The 'Chez stands alone The 2009 draft class won't be remembered as a great one, that's for sure. In an analysis of the '09 class, ESPN's John Clayton notes that only 60 draft picks remain with their original teams, including a shockingly low number at the top of the draft. Looking at it from a Jets angle, only one player (QB Mark Sanchez) remains from a three-man class. The other two, RB Shonn Greene (Titans) and G Matt Slauson (Bears) left this offseason via free agency. That may not seem like a lot of bang for the buck, but former GM Mike Tannenbaum correctly determined it wasn't a particularly deep draft. That's why he didn't mind trading picks for targeted players, a prime example of his quality-over-quantity approach. To trade up for Sanchez and Greene, the Jets dealt away five picks -- first-, second-, third-, fourth- and seventh-rounders. Sanchez (first round) and Greene (third), whom they gave a first-round grade, haven't lived up to expectations, but they were valuable members of two playoff teams. Ditto, Slauson (sixth). Funny story behind the drafting of Slauson: Without a pick in the fourth and fifth round, the decision-makers used the time to study extra tape of potential sixth-round picks. They didn't like any of the prospects. They never got around to watching extra Slauson tape, which, they later joked, may have been the reason they picked him. > http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/23505/the-09-draft-the-chez-stands-alone

One of which we tried luring here this offseason, Brandon Gibson, selected with the pick after Slauson. How much prep time does our FO really need that they are scouring TAPE in the middle of the draft?! They should have a board set up, and be using that time to be fielding potential UDFAs. IIRC, That was the year after we had signed what's-his-face to coach our O-line. Callahan, just coming from Nebraska. He had enough exposure to Matt Slauson to bang the table for him in the draft room, but not enough conviction to talk up Carl Nicks the year before? Instead, we took Eric Ainge two or three slots ahead of the probowl OG. Fckn ridiculous.

JiFtheOracle
Meh, 3 picks, all 3 players were starters at one point. All 3 players got extensions. None of them are particularly good, but thats actually not bad drafting truth be told.

We had a first round grade on him. Like ALL of our players drafted before the fifth round. Perhaps you would be better off as a "professional" talent grader on the Jets. Greenseed4
You're right. How hard could it be? The trick is to assign first round grades to players with one year of college production...who explode in some area at the Combine.

He traded up almost every year. I don't think he would know a deep draft from a shallow draft if someone stuck a gun to his head.
Bleedin Green
I think we'd all be much happier if the course of events had led this article title to instead read "Slauson stands alone".

shhwagah
The only good thing about the 2009 draft class is the 2014 compensatory draft picks we will get for all the FAs that are no longer on the team. Thank you, Tannenbaum.
