Jetfan13
Tight end Kellen Winslow returned to the Jets on Monday after serving his four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. Winslow was leading the team in receptions when he was suspended. During that time, he could not be at the team’s training center or attend games. Winslow said Monday he is still unsure what caused his failed test. “It’s something I really couldn’t control,” Winslow said. “I think it was something over my allergies, some medicine I was taking and it was on the banned substance list. It’s just life. You deal with stuff. People that know me know I’m not trying to gain an edge or something like that illegally. I respect the game too much for that.” Winslow said he is waiting to hear from the NFLPA what exactly caused the failed test. He said he only changed one medication he was taking, but was not clear when pressed about that drug. Winslow said he got it from a doctor, but said it wasn’t a prescription but “more like vitamins.” The NFL notified Winslow a couple of weeks before he was suspended, he said, but he chose not to appeal, saying he’d rather take the suspension early in the season. Winslow said he is not concerned about his reputation taking a hit. “I know who I am and I’m comfortable with who I am and that’s not who I am,” Winslow said. “I’m not trying to go out and take illegal stuff. That’s just not what I do.” Winslow’s playing time was reduced in the game before his suspension against the Falcons. He admitted he was bothered by that. “I was frustrated about my playing time and I want to help my team more, but that happens,” he said. “There’s more games to be played and I’ll be utilized. I’ll be ready.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WR Jeremy Kerley was diagnosed with a dislocated elbow, according to a source, meaning he will be out several weeks. Kerley was injured in Sunday’s win over the Saints and the injury looked like it could have been much worse. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Veteran guard Willie Colon laughed at the idea the 5-4 Jets would be in the playoffs if the season ended right now. “That doesn’t mean nothing to me, honestly,” he said. “We’ve got to take one game at a time. We’re not in the playoffs. That’s the reality. We can’t look past any opponent. We’ve done some good things. We’ve done some bad things. We’ve just got to do more of the good things.”

BroadwayJoe12
There was almost no way he was going to be healthy for a full 16 game season anyway, might as well give his body 6 weeks off from game activity in the middle of the season to rest up and get ready for the playoff push. Besides being away from the team, there's not much downside as we skated by pretty well without him.

Larz
so an NFL player is actually going to a doctor who prescribes "vitamins" without checking the banned substances list ? don't think so BS just admit it kellen
JoeKlecko
I have a lot of allergies, and I'm trying to figure out what his doctor could have given him that wasn't a prescription. At first I thought that possibly a corticosteroid like Flonase might have been the offending substance, but it is prescription. It must have been some herbal supplement that had ephedra or something that is seen as a stimulant, or like Lars suggests, he's just lying. I'm a normal dude who doesn't do make a millionaire's living via my physique, yet I still read labels. You'd think that some meathead who makes bundles of cash to catch the pigskin would be a little more careful.. or at least a better liar.

You'd also think that he'd be smart enough to give a list of the banned substances to all his doctors so that they'd know what NOT to give him. Through the haze of my memory, I think I remember his getting in trouble while in college for smoking pot. Does anyone else remember that?

BroadwayJoe12
Ehh, it depends on where you get your vitamins, protein powder etc. Most of the guys I ran with that made it to the olympics get even the things that aren't on the banned list tested via a lab, because these supplements and powders are very frequently tainted. There was a case a number of years ago where a health store was selling herbal "viagra" that actually worked and it was taken off the market because the secret ingredient turned out to be viagra. I have no idea whether or not Kellen is telling the truth, the fact of the matter is these things are tainted quite frequently, but ultimately it's his fault for not properly vetting the source. I understand that your Doc is prescribing it to you, but he's not making it and is at the hand of the manufacturers. If your job is on the line, spend a few bucks or have your team pay a lab to test it just to be safe.

BroadwayJoe12
I think the NFL will vett anything free of charge I thought as much, but wasn't positive. It's just an excuse that's getting old. I certainly buy that some of these guys have been the victim of tainted supplements, I've seen it happen at the collegiate level, but there's so many instances and anecdotes about it happening that these players should know by now to get everything tested, no matter how innocuous the supplement may seem. I mean christ, there was a girl banned from the olympics, months before it started, for taking medicine for the flu that was prescribed by her doctor. I can believe them, but I just don't buy the excuse anymore, they should be more careful.
