Falcons released G Jon Asamoah off injured reserve with an injury settlement.

Asamoah was placed on injured reserve with a hip injury early in September. Asamoah was never a fit in Kyle Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme, but did play well in 15 starts in 2014. Now healthy, Asamoah should latch on with a power-blocking squad in need of guard help. As is traditionally the case with castoffs from Atlanta, New England might make sense.

:frantically searches Wikipedia on information about zone-blocking vs power-blocking:

Yes, I think this would be a good fit as he fits what (googles Jets offensive line coach) Steve Marshall likes to do when we run the zippity bop in the frazzle hipdip.

That about sums it up nicely.

He was the Best Guard drafted out of the 2010 class and top FA Guard last year.

I agree, NO reason not to sign him if his health checks out: 27yo, TOP OL, Colon is gone and Winters serves us BEST as a Backup Guard on the OL, not starting.

DO IT MaCAGS!!!!

Falcons reach injury settlement with guard Jon Asamoah

The Atlanta Falcons parted ways with a veteran they thought would help them move forward when they reached an injury settlement with guard Jon Asamoah.

The move saves the Falcons $3.5 million in cash and $1.9 million in cap space next year. Asamoah will be off the books in 2017.

Asamoah, who started 15 games for the Falcons in 2014, was placed on injured reserve prior to the start of this season with a hip injury. The injury settlement means he is now a free agent.

The Falcons signed Asamoah, a former Kansas City Chief, to a five-year, $22.5 million contract before the '14 season with hopes of establishing stability at guard. Asamoah was better known as a pass protector from his right guard spot, but he was not an ideal fit for new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's outside-zone blocking scheme that requires solid lateral movement.

Asamoah was drafted in the third round by Falcons assistant general manager Scott Pioli when Pioli was the Chiefs general manager. Asamoah's departure does not reflect well on Pioli or general manager Thomas Dimitroff. Falcons owner Arthur Blank is evaluating the front office situation.

Asamoah was part of a Falcons' free-agent class that included nose tackle Paul Soliai and defensive tackle Tyson Jackson. Soliai, who has shown flashes this season, signed a five-year, $32 million deal ($14 million guaranteed). Jackson, who has had minimal impact, signed a five-year, $25 million deal ($11 million guaranteed).

Losing Asamoah doesn't hurt the offense line just based on the scheme being played, but guard continues to be an area that needs to be addressed. Right guard Chris Chester was signed to a one-year, $2.8 million deal and has been OK at times. Left guard Andy Levitre, who was acquired in a trade with Tennessee, continues to struggle and is tied with cornerback Robert Alford for the team lead with nine penalties. Levitre has base salaries of $4 million, $5.25 million, and $7 million the next three seasons after having a $1.5 million base this season.

:frantically googles 2010 draft class:

It appears that Mike Iupati has had the better career.

I stand corrected. OTTOMH, Iupati was 2012, but you are correct, Iupati was 2010. Thank you for the correction on accuracy C-3PO. :-)

Rephrase then: Asamoah is the best Guard AFTER Mike Iupati from the 2010 draft; we also selected Vlad Duccasse in the 2nd rounds, Asamoah was taken in the 3rd.

Also how about the Jets' draft that year?

Wilson, Ducasse, McKnight, and the Terminator. Sweet merciful crap.

Well to be entirely fair, we sent two picks (3 and 5?) to the Browns for Braylon, who turned out to be worth it if only for that image of him dragging multiple Patriot defenders into the end zone.  But yes, when it comes to actual drafting of players, Idzik was worse than a random number generator.  We'd have been better off if he traded every pick for established players.

This would be a lovely critique of John Idzik had he been the GM of the Jets in 2010.
